Pin trading rules - need some help understanding

Hi,

I just purchased 40 pins on eBay for my 2 daughters trade on our upcoming trip.

My daughters also like to wear pinback buttons and many are Disney related. Mostly with sayings that are ride references or inside jokes from rides.

On laughing place this is what they say are the rules:

Cast Member to Guest - Rules about what is and isn’t tradable apply for trades between Cast Members and Guests (see the new Disneyland Resort Guidelines in the Pin Etiquette section on page 3). It’s very easy to tell which Cast Members are taking part in the Pin Trading promotion as they wear their "official" Pin Trading lanyards while in costume and on stage. A Cast Member lanyard must have 12 tradable pins on it at all times and each of those 12 pins should be different (pins that a CM may have on their costumes, their name badges or service pins are off limits to trades). You are free to trade for any of them as long as the pin you’re offering is tradable under the guidelines (has a ©Disney) and isn’t already on the lanyard. Trades with Cast Members are one for one - one pin of yours for one pin off of their lanyard (except if it’s a set, then multiples are traded as one pin).

Cast Members are free to trade with any Guest at any time during their shift. Do take into account that Pin Trading, while fun for you, isn’t the only activity the CM is responsible for during their day and some common courtesy should prevail during trades. If you see a pin that you want, but the CM is busy loading an attraction, serving food, ringing up a sale or helping another Guest, let that Cast Member know that you’d like to trade and then wait for them to finish, or get in line and let them do their jobs until they get to you. Cast Members wear lanyards and trade because they want to and are appreciative of traders who don’t interrupt their "other" jobs.

Guest to Guest - Trades between Guests only have one hard and fast rule - no monies are to change hands during the trad.- Guests asking for money or those accepting payment can be asked to leave the park or trading location. Beyond that - anything goes and any pin is tradable. While trades with Cast members are one for one, trades between Guests have no limits. There are some unspoken rules though: primarily - look out for newbie traders and children. While some are trading for fun, others are not above taking advantage of those who are new to collecting or that may be too young to understand a trade.

On the Cast Member to guest section it says: "You are free to trade for any of them as long as the pin you’re offering is tradable under the guidelines (has a ©Disney) and isn’t already on the lanyard"

It does not say that on the guest to guest section.

So I was wondering if my daughters have any of the pinback buttons on, and a guest asks to trade for them are they aloud? They are pretty obvious they are not Disney created items and would even tell that to anybody asking them to trade. I just don't want to get into trouble for it.

Thanks,
Mike :)

Guest to guest doesn't have that rule because whatever you do is up to you. If the other person is agreeable and no money changes hands, you're fine.

OK that is great thanks! I just wanted to know what can and can not be done. I am hoping this is something my daughters enjoy. We are going at a more crowded time than we usually do so was looking for some new fun stuff for them to do while we are there.

Thanks for the info!

Tell them to not be afraid to go up to cast members with lanyards (of course you will go with them). My oldest was very shy, but not my youngest and she ended up getting a very special pin from the guy in charge of DAK!

When my boys started collecting/trading, I noticed that adults (both CMs and guests) would check with me or my wife before trading with them. The boys thoroughly enjoyed trading and sought out people to trade with at restaurants and in lines. Don't be surprised if your kids trade for a pin one day, then trade it away the next. It may take a while before they figure what pins they really want to collect.

We noticed on our most recent trip that our daughter (age 7) liked to trade just for the sake of trading... She really enjoys interacting with the CMs. She has her delivery down: "May I see your pins, please?" It is really cute to watch.

Thanks all. I am hoping this is something to do that they will enjoy doing. I am glad I purchased a bulk lot for a reasonable price as i can't afford 7, 8, 12 dollars per pin and yet they will still get to enjoy the experience.

One last thing. The lanyards to hold the pins. Is there a place to purchase them other than at WDW for a reasonable price? i wanted to have them for them before we left to go.

Thanks,
Mike

Just a thought, If you buy pins or trade for pins you want to keep, dont take them to the parks. I only took pins on my lanyard that i wanted to trade. That way when I would aproach somebody to trade I didnt have to decide which one I wanted to let go of because they were all traders. Also,be sure to have them check all cms and tell them to look for employes in suits. I traded a suit for a very limited edition. I also traded with a cm that had just started er shift and got a really neat pin. Its something to do while waiting in line or for a show to start. Dont forget Downtown Disney, lots of people to trade with there. Most of all have fun with it!!!!
