Well I never.. Let it be known that scots are not stingy..;) We have 11 lanyards and always get Disney ones with the year of our visit...Can't remember how much they cost, but I don't think it's that expensive.Anyway, that's only my opinion. As far as autograph books,MouseGears have plenty..

You can buy starter pin trading sets at Disney, they come with a lanyard and pins. You can get one on e-bay and choosing wisely, pick up a lanyard and pins at a cheaper cost. Or I've seen guests just carry pins in a baggie and pull a couple of pins out at trading time. There are also small pin trading bags & pouches you can purchase to carry them in. Some people even make their own felt carrying pouches or pin them to a hat or vest.... The young kids can trade with CM's who wear green lanyards, adults can't. Sometimes I've seen better pins on the green lanyards that I would have liked to trade for but couldn't.

Buy a "trading set" on eBay. It is a great way to start without a big investment. Read reviews and it is pretty easy to figure out who to buy from. We bought lanyards and autograph books at our resort....Poly has a great gift shop with lots to pick from. I bought Sharpie pens that clicked to open from Walmart. It made it very easy for the characters to sign autographs and no worries about getting the caps off.

Fine points will probably be fine. Clicks are just convenient. Don't worry about all the tiny details....it is going to be a great trip that your family remember for a lifetime!

If you buy an autograph book from WDW, they come with a small elastic loop on the top to slide your pen/marker into so they'll always be together. Click pens are better than one with a cap because if you forget to take it off and hand it to the character, some have an awkward getting them apart.

An important tip for pin trading---If you choose to use a lanyard, make sure the pin back is secured as tight as possible. Sometimes they come loose and you'll lose the back or the entire pin. Don't want that to happen.

While lanyards are cute and can be found for fairly cheap (I got our girls' first ones for $1 each, but the sturdier ones are more in the $7-10 range from what I've seen), you'll still run into the possibility of losing pins. If you look around on ebay, you'll see pin trading bags. The bags have several flaps inside to secure pins...this way the child can have more pins and are far less likely to lose them due to backing issues.

Keep in mind though a laynard full of pins can get very heavy especially for a little one , also keep in mind as mentioned before the pin backs stink and come off very easily. I would suggest just putting a couple of inexpensive pins on the laynard at a time and keep the rest of them in your purse or bag.

Yeah, I'm not sure we're even going to use the lanyard. I bought a bunch of pins and a lanyard on eBay (this will be our first time trading pins) and in just the few minutes it took me to put the pins on the lanyard a bunch were already falling off. Not sure exactly how we're going to handle that but the baggie option might be a good one.
