Interesting. I can't imagine that the cost of installing these readers would be balanced out by the time saved in line or the data Disney may be collecting from them, but maybe I'm missing something.

I doubt that there will be a huge time savings, but I have found that RFID tend to be more reliable than the magnetic strips. 1 wave is much better that ten swipes followed by entering a card manually. More than anything I think that it is just one piece of the puzzle in getting rid of the magnetic stripes entirely and going to a 100% RFID system.

Makes sense, it will be interesting to watch as the whole RFID/next gen stuff is rolled out and how many different offering they will produce.

Slightly off topic here, but is the "design your own TT car" going to use the same type of reader at the different booths in the queue?

And for those of you complaining about Disney Corp not leading the world into the future, it will be interesting to see how long it takes for the rest of the world to start doing this sort of thing, too.

I really wish this stuff was NFC. I would love to just use my phone since Im starting to use it in place of my cards recently.

My assumption is that RFID payments will be a higher tech equivalent of using your room key to charge purchases at resorts and cruise ships.

But I'm curious how Disney will ensure the security of those purchases/admission in the case the RFID card/wristband/device is lost or stolen.

Sure, such a risk exists now. And I'm sure now and in the future Disney would never hold you responsible for unauthorized purchases. But I assume the risk greatly increases when those purchases can be made property-wide instead of at a single hotel or ship. And it sounds like RFID may often take the form of a "self-checkout" lane at the grocery store, with less one-on-one contact with employees, which presumably deters some theft.

Unfortunatlely this is an area that isn't inovative.

'Tap and Go' payment terminals have been around for quite some time - they just aren't taking off in the states. Google wallet and NFC? Also already out there. And Europe is well ahead in adoption vs the US in using smartchip credit cards even tho we had similar things ages ago.. but never took off in the US.

And ironically - it doesn't look like these readers have the smartchip sockets.

Most direct solution? Simply a PIN code configured by the guest at registration. Slower solution.. still require a signature like they already do with your resort ID cards (and on DCL)
