Photo editing

I`m looking into my first photo editing software. I`ve been using the software that came with the camera and I think it`s time for an upgrade. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Lightroom, great editor & photo/video organizer, pretty much all you need. Photoshop Elements is a little cheaper and does come with a separate organizer, but if you shoot raw PSE will only handle 8-bit files and have to convert the files from your camera. I think LR is an easier editor and better organizer.

I also use Microsoft Image Composite Editor for panoramas, it's free and to my eyes does a good job.

I wouldn't worry about the more fancy stuff like the Nik/Topaz/On One collections just yet.

Lightroom is all you need, seriously. Don't mess with anything else. Photoshop is about manipulation, most people confuse it with a "photo editor". There's a reason LR is 150 bucks and PS is 600... pS has so many features you'll NEVER use as a photographer.

If you have a student in your life, or know one, use their student discount. That makes LR sub 100 dollars.

I use Apple Aperture 3 for image management and most photo adjustments. And for anything else, Photoshop.

Are there any decent Freeware photo editors? Do the Open Office folks manage something maybe?

I can't imagine... if you're talking basic cropping and such, yeah but to get into some of the nitty gritty stuff I'd highly doubt it.

I`m looking at Light-room 5. Amazon has it for about $100.00. It looks like a pretty substantial upgrade from my Canon software.

Dont get it from amazon...it may be SLIGHTLY more pricey, but you can sign up for this:

https://creative.adobe.com/plans/offer/photoshop lightroom

$10 a month and you get both Lightroom AND Photoshop (both constantly updated to the latest versions). In my opinion, this is the best value for your dollar if you plan on taking your photo editing to the next level, as Lightroom and Photoshop both play very well with each other.

And that price is for 2 "floating" licenses, meaning you can have it installed and running on 2 different computers at one time.

If you are worried about a learning curve...youtube. There are TONS upon TONS of free tutorials on BOTH programs on there.

*EDIT*

Scratch that. It WAS $10 a month for everyone for a limited time, but to qualify for that now, you must own CS3 (I am unsure when the promotion ended, or when...if at all..its coming back). Now its $50 a month. Damn.

I just downloaded the free 30 day trial of LR5. I like it so far. It`s a lot to learn. I was also looking at photo-shop elements. I might try that one next.

Lightroom is really all you need for editing. PS is great, but it has a ton of features most people never use (or even know exist) and has a pretty steep learning curve.

I guess the main question I would have is what kind of editing are you trying to do?

Me, I stick to really simple edits and straight out of the camera due to insane deadlines. (Three photos halfway through the first, five more at halftime and 5 quick game action postgame and then the rest within an hour)
