photo editing software

Ok guys, I have seen a lot of pics on here that I absolutely adore. What in your opinion is the best software for editing? I am looking at mostly wanting the ability to crop people out of a pic while leaving the original pic and background in tack (and the simplest way of doing it). I have seen a pic on here that has main street empty although it was not, but I don't have the time to search back for over 200 pages of pics to find out who the op was.

Thank you everyone for your expertise!

The photo editing program I use most is Paint.net. It has many of the same features as Photoshop, but it's a lot more user-friendly. Even better, it's free. Here's a link to their site: http://www.getpaint.net/

Another option is the GIMP. It's even more similar to Photoshop, and has a lot more tools available than Paint.net. However, I find it a bit less user-friendly, and only use it when I really need to. It's also free. Here's a link to the GIMP's site: http://www.gimp.org/

which photoshop are you using? i see those things going for hundreds of dollars. i have downloaded the free trial of the lower end one. I haven't gotten the chance to mess with it much, but it doesn't look as if i can crop out people out of a crowd and leave the background intact.

i use photoshop elements.

now i have a question. are you looking to crop out people and have the background there with just a click? can programs do that? just curious, because i have removed people from my pics, but i have had to recreate the background.

I have CS3 Extended with a handful of assorted plugins. I also have Corel PHOTO-PAINT X3, The Gimp 2, and Paint.net... but I prefer CS3. I keep those other programs for small features they have that I ocassionally need or like having access to.

If your budget allows Photoshop CS3 is the end all be all of photo editing... If I was on a budget I would go with Paintshop Pro (I think they are up to version 11 or something like that but frankly version 8 was good enough and more user friendly). I only mention Paintshop Pro instead of Gimp because paintshop can actually handle some of the photoshop plug-ins that are available, I don't think Gimp will allow that. And although I have both CS3 and Paintshop Pro I find that for most things I will use Paintshop Pro because it is faster, CS3 really is only justified when there are some more advanced editing or tricky problems.

Can i chime in? :p

Gimpshop. Its a "mod" of Gimp that makes it look and function a LOT like photosohop..and its free :)

http://www.gimpshop.com/download.shtml

Since we arent sure if you are a MAC or a PC (or even linux :o ) user..thats a link to all versions for you.

Photoshop is great..and if known well enough..you don't need to get any 3rd party plugins (aka..cheats). The price..meh..if you work in the industry its worth the investment, but if you are a hobbiest, stick to programs like gimp or paint.net for now :)

Dan... the onOne genuine fractals plugin is a godsend, and does photo enlargement better than any Adobe feature included... short of vectorizing the damn image and spending a few days fixing it that way.

Genuine Fractals is one of many plugins that do nothing more than interpolation, which has been something you could do in Photoshop for a long long time :)

All the 3rd party plugins do is make it easier :)

While I might agree that a good many of the plug-ins only speed up what photoshop can already do, I think you'll find that there are some plug-ins that offer options not found in photoshop or that if you used photoshop to acheive the same result it would take you months of work (which from mystandpoint means it isn't available since I don't want to waste that much time on 1 photo).

There are a lot more to plug-ins than just blowing up a photo.
