Good protection from the millions of camera flashes that go off during the ride...
I dunno...we go to MK like once a week now even if it's just for dinner, but we'll usually catch one or two rides...I used to think Small World was the worst, but my observations from the past month is apparently no one wants to go on it anymore so they now flood Pan and Little Mermaid with their flashes and tell you you're the a-hole when you kindly ask them to stop using the flash...if their eyes are good under those conditions then apparently mine aren't suppose to be affected either...and rules? well you have no idea how many times I've been told "I have kids, the rules don't apply to me..." when I've quietly pointed out it's a park policy to not use your flash on dark rides...Not sure if it's just me, but I rarely see any flashes going off during the ride. Maybe I'm just lucky and don't get to ride at the same time as rude guests!

And like pan the mermaid constantly puts you parallel from the people across from you once you reach the under the sea room so you're in their direct shot...I'd have to agree with you that they should enforce it; people seem to forget how much it ruins the dark ride experience, and my eyes of course...The flashes on Mermaid were INSANE when we went on in May. It was like a celebrity was walking by a mob of papparazzi or something. My cousins SCREAMED at some girl to stop taking flash photos when w got stopped. she ignored him and kept right on taking pictures. I don't know why they are not more strict with this. There are cameras on every ride, they can see who the culprits are.
You can add that using your flash in the dark actually takes worse pictures since most of the dark rides have their subjects illuminated to begin with...Also, they're going to find photos online that are WAY better than theirs...
