The parking lots can be quite a walk. There are trams that pick you up and drop you off at the gate of the park. The WDW transportation is really pretty good. If you're staying on property, you can take the Bus/Monorail/Boat etc. to the park of your choice from your resort. Even non-Disney hotels provide transportation to the property. Also if staying on property, you get a parking pass for the length of your stay and the you don't have to pay the per day fee at each park.

Each park has it own parking lot. It can be a bit of a walk, but you always have the option of taking a tram from the row where you parked to the main enterance of the park. The parking lots are all right next to the parks, with the exception of the magic kingdom's lot, which is called 'the transportation and ticket center' which is a mile and a half away from the magic kingdom. The deal with that is that you park at the Trans Ticket Center, then take either a monorail or a boat to the main enterance of the Magic Kingdom. It takes a few extra minutes, but it can be fun if you like monorails or boats (and there are no other options).

As far as cost is concerned, if you are staying in one of the Disney resorts, you have free access to the parking lots, but you can also take resort busses/boats/monorails directly to the front of the park. If you are staying off property, then you pay a parking fee (its been a year since i worked at main enterance, but if i remember correctly its $6) which allows you to park in any of the park's parking lots, and jump around between them. You pay this when you enter whichever parking lot you go to first each day.

It is $7 now if your not staying on the property. Remember that if you have a park hopper pass you can use all of Disney's tranportation. You can then park for free at Downtown Disney and take a bus to the park of your choosing. When you get back to DD at the end of the day you can eat there, shop, or go nuts with the 7 bucks you saved on parking(yeah right!).:slurp:

Some of the books recommend driving your own car even if you are staying on property. My question is why?

Also, to get to MK would it make sense to go to Epcot and hop the monorail, leaving your car at Epcot?

One last question, do these shoes go with my belt?

Two of my reasons for driving my own car on property:

1. We often stay at the Yacht Club. Bus ride to AK has several stops and just takes a long time. Thus, we drive ourselves to AK and believe that it is easier and faster. We walk to Epcot and boat/walk to MGM, which are definitely easier than driving. As to MK, since the bus takes you right up to the front gate (versus only to the TTC if you drive), we take the bus to MK.

Also, no buses go direct from one resort to another. So, if you are planning to go from one resort to another resort for a meal or an activity, the car is much faster (no more than 15 minutes v. what could take an hour, with having to take one bus go to TTC or DD and then transfer to another for second resort).

2. Getting to MK via Epcot/monorail makes good sense if you are planning to go back to Epcot later in the day. However, parking at Epcot and taking monorail from there to MK (requiring you to switch monorails at the TTC) is not going to be easier than parking at MK in the first place and then getting a monorail (or ferryboat) at the TTC.

You can't go from the parks to downtown disney and vice versa... Part of the reason for it is the suggestion you made ;)

Yep...so add in a trip to one of the resorts, then another trip to the park. On the way back, it will be a trip to the resort from the park, and then on to DTD.

That is the one drawback of WDW transportation. There are a few times "you can't get there from here". For example, staying at the Poly and you want to go mini-golfing at Fantasia Gardens. You must get to a park (monorail to MK is our usual choice) then but to Swan/Dolphin and walk from there. This trip can take the better part of an hour. This makes having a car helpful. Also nice to have a car when going from a water park for part of the day and then heading off to a park. With the car, you can leave your water park stuff in the car until later. We've even taken a cab from a park like AK to DTD because it would be quicker and easier this way. I love WDW transportation. Sometimes it can be a bit time consuming though.
