park videos on computer

I have a question, but it may be hard to understand as it is difficult to explain. (at least for me)

I want to "digit-ize" my home videos of the parks, as in, put them on my computer. What kind of formats, and sizes or resolutions can keep them at good quality, but small in size (referring to memory)

THANKS!

In order to make the AVI's small though, you need to use some form of video compression codec. I use DIVX which technically costs money to use (http://www.divx.com/). Alot of people are switching to using Xvid (http://www.xvid.org/) because it is totally free and yields similiar results to DIVX.

Also you'll want to compress the audio in the AVI. There are different codecs for that as well. I usually use MP3, but recently discovered OGG vorbis audio. Same argument as DIVX/XVID, with OGG Vorbis being the completely free one to use. One thing I have noticed about ogg is that you can get higher quality audio for smaller filesizes than with MP3, which may or may not be important to you.

See the guides at http://www.doom9.org to get a good idea of how to work with these codecs when you start making videos. I recommend using the free video program called VirtualDub or one of it's derivatives when you get going. It's an awesome little program with tons of filters and supports waiting to be utilized.
