Park Ticket Dilemma

I am in the infancy of planning my first adult trip to WDW (I went once way back in 92.) I am looking at plan oltions and park ticket prices and such. I am planning to go for 10 days and it is giving me the package with a 10 day ticket (park hopper and water fun included). It seems like a waste if I won't be going to one of the theme parks for a day or two (or three!). If I want to leave lag days in the middle, would I just purchase an 8 day ticket? How do you do it?

Yep you just purchase the ticket with the amount of days you plan on actually being in a park. You can have rest days in between :)

Thanks for replying! A few more things to consider is if I end up going a show or dinner one night and it is in one of the parks. I really want to check out one of the World Showcase restaurants! I guess I would just plan to go there on a park day. I was trying to not do that but I guess it would be more economical to.

I would purchase a 7 day park hopper and water park...I think you could hit the parks 7 days and the water parks at least twice and do nothing for a day and not run out of days. Before your ticket days are used up you could always add days at the discounted price at one of the ticket windows at any of the parks.
Last summer we were on property 12 days. I bought 8 day park hoppers with water park and we had one water park day option left when our vacation ended. We spent 4 days not visiting the parks but doing water parks and disney quest or pool time.

I too would purchase the 7 or 8 day with park hopper. As far as the waterpark and more option that can removed if you don't want to visit the waterparks. Not sure if you plan on visiting downtown Disney (Disney Springs) and going to DisneyQuest but I believe tickets for that are included in the water park tickets. Have fun no matter what you choose.

We quit buying packages years ago. It is just as cheap to buy the room and tickets separately as to buy a package. However, if you want the dinning plan, you have to buy a package. Also, you don't need trip insurance since you can cancel up to five days before arrival with no penalty, whereas with a package you have to cancel 45 days out.
To add park hopper and water park to a ticket is only 81.00. 59.00 is park hopper and 22.00 is water park. This is a good deal because it's a one-time charge added onto your ticket, and it covers your entire stay. You can always add/upgrade when you get there and see what you are going to be able to do. You cannot take away once tickets are paid for though.
As someone pointed out, it's only around 10.00 per day after day four, so we always buy an extra day in case we get there early enough to hit a park for a while. That's probably the biggest bang for your buck at WDW. We don't have to worry about that in years we have AP's.

Thank you guys for your input. I'm defintely thinking about reducing the amount of days. I am still going to be purchasing the package, though. Reason being-- the dining plan. Which leads me to my next issue.

If I reduce the amount of days for park tickets from 10 to 8, will that effect the amount of DP days I am alotted? I'm not sure if its going by park tix or nights at the resort?

The dining plan is based on how many nights you stay. If you stay 10 nights you get 10 days worth of meals.
