The fine print in the Magic Key pass info said a paper pass would cost $20. Some folks here said they had gotten them for free. I dislike having to fumble for my phone, get the app open, find my pass, so I went by the ticket booth. She said it would be $10. I believed her. She was just joking. It was free. I asked then, if a replacement would cost. She said something like she was supposed to charge $5, but probably wouldn't charge anything.
CMs didn't know what to make of them. One lady at Paradise Gardens, said she couldn't scan the card, we said 'try it'. It worked.
The front gate guy was surprised our photos were already in the system.

I can second this - the CM at the booth when we got our "annual passes" last week said that we could get them at the entrance for free or at the ticket booth. There was no mention of cost.

Is it possible that the $20 was to replace a lost or stolen pass?
My impression is that the paper ticket was a backup to your phone. The super helpful CM seem to indicate that they're trying to move everything onto the app. Maybe it's to discourage people from treating them as disposable items so they don't have to bother with the reprinting?

I printed my own plastic Magic Key pass using an online ID card printer and it works just fine; some CMs won't take it for whatever reason but it's especially helpful for places like Lamplight Lounge rather than having to hobble over to their register to scan the app.
Someone said that DL only takes their own ticket media. I could imagine it's from fear of forgeries.

We were given paper passes when we bought our Keys at the ticket window in DTD, we didn’t even ask for them. I just assumed the first was free and after that there’d be a replacement fee like the old APs.

I thought they weren’t selling passes at the ticket windows?
They are encouraging people to buy them online but you can buy them at the window also. We upgraded day passes using our Disney rewards gift cards and there was no way to enter them on the app so we had to use the windows.

I mean…. a barcode is a barcode. You could trivially send a screenshot of your pass barcode to someone else. If they are worried about forgeries, then they should switch to RFID ticket media like WDW.

My nephew lost his paper ticket but he had taken a picture of the barcode and just used that for 2 days last month.

We were there last week and were told the paper passes were good for one day only and cost $20. This was from a cast member standing outside the CA customer service place near the gate. She said Disney was moving everything to phones. Earlier, I needed to show my AP- sorry, Magic Key:rolleyes: pass- for a dining discount, and after some discussion between me and the cashier and another cashier, she reluctantly scanned my printed receipt. I'm not crazy about such dependence on my phone while in the parks. I don't see why they can't give out plastic ones like they did before, if requested.

I think there's a lack of correct information among CMs. Nobody has been trained. I had read the $20 for a paper pass in the fine print on the site, so when I went up to the ticket window, I was pleasantly surprised when I got it for free. The CM said something like 'I'm supposed to charge something like $5 for replacements, but I wouldn't charge for that.' She didn't say anything about it only being good for a day. We'll see next time I use it. I just checked my paper pass. There's no date on it!!
The people at the front gate were surprised that our photos were already in the system (when we used our paper passes). A lady at a restaurant didn't want to use the card for the AP discount, we said just try it, and it worked. Another hostess ended of typing in the number code instead of scanning the tiny QR code on the card.
I hate having to use my phone, too. I hope your guy was wrong and we can all get CMs used to using our free, paper Magic Keys. ;)
