My friend and her family (pictured above), are headed to Disney to celebrate her husband's military retirement.
A little over a year ago he was landing his helicopter in Afghanistan, and was in an IED explosion. His flight partner died. He had 12 surgeries, a long hospitalization and had to relearn how to walk. He was awarded the Purple Heart (Story here: http://www.dvidshub.net/news/118103/story-never-forgotten#.VNjVhnW9LCS )
I'm on a facebook group that features fans of WDW and actual WDW cast members. It's a place where you can ask questions when planning your trip.
I had heard Disney will do special surprises for deserving families if you give them a heads up... Especially vets.
I posted a question about who to contact (phone number) to see if something special could be done and suddenly my inbox blew up with a bunch of strangers, WDW CM's and a Sea World staff member wanting to help! They are setting up a bunch of surprises for them.
Some of the things being floated around/planning: either grand marshall the parade and/or have her husband escort the flag at the evening flag retreat ceremony at the Magic Kingdom, they may do a flash mob to welcome them upon check-in, a welcome basket from Mickey!
Even SeaWorld is setting up a full free day - tickets, food and a special acknowledgment of Andy and their family during an Armed Forces tribute during one of the Aquatic shows.
A few people who do not work at Disney pm'ed me and wanted to help too. One lady had a best friend who owns a Disney delivery service for gift baskets to have in the room to surprise people. She wanted to donate money so we can have a "Welcome Basket" with a gift card and goodies "from Mickey" when they get in their room. Her friend is going to make a basket at-cost/deep discount with free delivery for them! Several strangers even donated to contribute toward their basket (Via my paypal).
I had to get their reservation number and travel dates for these folks to set this all up and only told my friend that Mickey needs it to surprise them. She is freaking out (in a good way)!
The generosity of these CM's and strangers is overwhelming. All I asked my friend to do when they go in March is take pictures of things that are unexpected magic (if possible).
These folks truly carry the magic of the Disney spirit! Very verklempt!
