Overhauled attractions

When an attraction is overhauled (GMR, Splash Mountain, etc), what happens to all of the attraction props (not including animatronics)? Are they simply trashed, put in storage, or offered to Cast Members to buy?

Some things are kept to be reutilized elsewhere, some are held in storage that could turn up again repurposed in another form, some items get sold directly from Disney to collectable shops to be resold to the public, but mostly things are trashed. Some things do find their way to CM's for purchase. Over the years Dis has trashed so many items that we would value and lots of historical items have been lost forever.
You can read about how Dis historian Dave Smith rescued so much of the early Disney history that would have forever been lost.

I’ve said before they should take one of the empty buildings and have a site for guests to view things like this along with other memorabilia that would be interesting to revisit. Disney has so much history to see and learn from. An on-site Disney museum would be fantastic. One Man’s Dream that had a very small number of items kept me enthralled every time I visited.

That's something they could have done with the empty huge open showroom that was The Timekeeper and now is MILF (in a much reduced size). Or maybe even right across by combining the two theaters where Stitches Great Escape once resided. I know it isn't exactly on theme but neither is two empty or nearly empty large spaces. Even better they could use the the places in Epcot that have been mostly empty (CommuniCore) around the central fountain (gone now) that were on either side of it. After the first few years, they were never able to find stuff to put in there that might be interesting to see. I guess they tore down the Land Pavilion side area. Or that ginormous area that was once an food court (Tomorrowland Terrace that is just at the right end of Main Street. that is a colossal waste of space but would work as a part of Main Street. That is right on the border of Main Street and Tomorrowland but could be modified to be part of Main Street There are other places that are empty and in massive need of being a place to disperse the crowds, as well.

I hope the changes in nostalgia, either with night time events or run disney, that they are seeing there is now a population of people that want to see the old sky buckets the people mover cars from disneyland etc. It now can make them money. Before nobody really cared and things ended up in the trash because there was no value beyond scrap price. As the decades have progressed though we have seen how people a) want a selfie with basically anything either for personal or the gram b) the amount of people that respect the history of disney and its parks, that they can sell that experience either in one time events, or museums (future maybe?)

I also think the loss of Bucky shows them that they need to get stuff out, catalogued and put into storage and not left to rot... well we can hope they learned their lesson.
