"Ortensia the Cat and Oswald the Rabbit will play starring roles during the Lunar New Year festival running from Friday, Jan. 20 to Feb. 15 at Disney California Adventure.

Ortensia and Oswald will make meet-and-greet appearances dressed in Lunar New Year attire in DCA’s Paradise Gardens gazebo — taking turns posing separately for photos and signing autographs during the month-long festival.

Ortensia and Oswald are the faces of the Lunar New Year festival at Disney California Adventure that celebrates the Year of the Cat in Vietnam and the Year of the Rabbit in China and South Korea.

Oswald will wear custom embroidered shorts in rich golds with an ocean wave motif and a matching hat. Ortensia will wear a golden skirt with lotus, apricot and peach flowers inspired by the traditional Vietnamese ao dai gown and a matching Vietnamese khan dong headpiece embroidered in reds, pinks and golds."

I'm sure this is controversial to say, but I wish Disney would give Oswald an updated design so he doesn't feel stuck in 1927.
That's going to be much trickier to pull off for both of them. Especially after seeing Oswald's many redesigns back when Universal owned him (such as going for a much cuter designs, to slowly given a more realistic design).

The closest I could find to a modern design of Oswald are these mockups of Oswald if he was in Mickey, Donald, Goofy: The Three Muskateers from years back.

They should do more with Oswald than making him a video game villain and dragging him out in DCA. Make some new shorts with Oswald and Mickey together in the hand drawn style!
I'm still bummed about the planned but never made Oswald the Lucky Rabbit Animated Series from years back. It was by the same team behind Legend of The Three Caballeros but Disney quickly rejected the pitch for unknown reasons.

Apparently he was off limits, but I remember the series was planned to be a Disney+ Original Series before the service was launched.

Oswald would be a natural fit for the style of the new Mickey cartoons. I can't imagine how they'd work him in, but that's probably why my career is not as a writer.

I really liked the rivalry between the two in Epic Mickey (Oswald’s only a villain—with a genuinely understandable motive—for the first half). I’d love to see that theme carried forward, with Oswald harboring that hurt and jealousy of Mickey being Walt’s favorite, but dealing with it… and Mickey feeling guilty about what he accidentally did to Oswald’s entire world. Oswald should bring that edge of “Life ain’t perfect, Mick,” to their teamups.

Man, the plot of Epic Mickey was wonderful. It’s such a shame the gameplay was mediocre.

The Gremlins deserves a second chance! I remember seeing them featured briefly in The Imagineering Story in photos from the building of Walt Disney Imagineering.

I quite liked the gameplay. But the story and world building were definitely the highlight.

And who, may I ask, is Ortensia The Cat?

Oswald's even more obscure lady friend?

I can drop obscure Disney cultural references into conversations with the best of 'em, from Herbie Goes Bananas to The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes to Celebrity Sports Center to Midget Autopia to the Kaiser Aluminum Hall of Fame.

But Ortensia The Cat? That's a new one.

Ortensia debuted in the lost Oswald the Lucky Rabbit cartoon "The Banker's daughter" in 1927.

She managed to appear in various Oswald cartoons during the "Disney Oswald Era" and "Universal Oswald Era". Her only notable appearance when Disney owned Oswald was "Oh What A Knight".

As the 1930s progressed, she slowly started disappearing in later Oswald Cartoons during Universal's ownership. When Universal decided to redesign Oswald to look much cuter and more realistic. He was given a few different love interests that were rabbits.

Ortensia was also the replacement to Oswald's previous love interest Francine Cottontail (her actual name is censored on this site). However she remained unnamed until Epic Mickey was in development where she was given an official name to match the first names such as Mickey/Minnie or Donald/Daisy.

Epic Mickey served as a major reintroduction to both Oswald and Ortensia to the next generation. With Epic Mickey 2 giving her a more prominent role.

She wouldn't make her Disney Parks debut until 2018 at Disneyland Paris' Fandaze Celebration where they created a special show dedicated to Oswald.

She's basically the original Minnie Mouse. Unlike Mickey and Minnie, they have their own bunny children which they had alot over the years.

I think she's popular enough among 20-35 year old Disney fans because of the Epic Mickey games for this to work.

Since I brought up the unmade Oswald the Lucky Rabbit Animated Series, the Disney Television Animation News just brought to light on a silent animatic from an episode of the unmade series titled "Footless & Fancy Free". The animatic was uploaded on November 2014 by Chris H (previously unlisted).
