I think we are now coming to the point where the realization that the internet CANNOT be free is about to hit.
The reality is, that somebody, somewhere along the line is paying for Internet bandwidth whenever somebody visits a site. So everytime somebody views a page on a website, it has to be paid for.
Over the past few years, while the Internet was gaining users, people were happy to foot the bill for the site personally. But as numbers are growing, it is becoming very expensive to run even a moderately successful website.
When i tell people this, they always say "oh! I know of a host that has unlimited diskspace, unlimited bandwidth and is FREE!". There is no such thing! Hidden in the small print, is all they need to kick you off the second you get more than a few 100 visitors per day. The only way to run a website is to use a quality host and PAY for the space and transfer. The only problem with this, is that the more users you get visiting the site, the more it costs. I think during the next year we will see more of the sites move to a subscription only scenario, much like a magazine subscription.
I know the webmaster over at Orlandorocks, I will see if I can find out what is happening.
