I was just reading an article on tower of terror.com. Its a really cool web site, by the way, if you havent been there.
Anyway, the site is currently running the whole "backstory" to the Tower of Terror and Sunset Boulevard: How it came to be, what other things were planned, etc.
Anywho, some of you may have already heard about the plans they had for this expansion. I had heard a little bit about "Roger Rabbit's Hollywood" going in where Fantasmic currently is. Well, after reading about the things they all had planned for the area, I couldn't believe these things never got made!
Besides Tower of Terror, they had planned the Roger Rabbit area, with 4 whole rides for the place! There was going to be ROger Rabbits Cartoon Spin (currently in DL), a Baby Herman Baby Buggy Ride, which was said to be similar to Mr. Toad, a wacky, cartoon rollercoaster, based on one of the Roger Rabbit shorts, and what looked to be a very awesome simulator ride. This ride was going to be animated, but the cool thing was it would have a screen not only in front of you, but also on the sides, to enhance the feel that you are really taking this tour of a cartoon world. This concept has been thrown around a lot in rumors, I never thought that Imagineering was seriously planning a ride of this kind.
Then there would be the rest of Sunset Boulevard, which would include a 1930's "Club" restaurant, complete with live big band music. Threre was also a ________ Tracy gangster ride, similar to Buzz Lightyear, where you would use a tommy gun to shoot bad guys. PLUS, the boulevard was to have a light rail streetcar that you could ride around the park on. Very cool.
Finally, they were going to make a recreation of the original Walt Disney Studios on Hyperion Ave. it would have a tour and interactive areas on how animation was once made. It would show just how much work was put into the movies before the age of computers came along. This would have been awesome for us Disney enthusiasts, but as the article said, the regular public probably wouldnt find it as interesting.
:grumble grumble:
Unfortunately, due to budget cuts, the failure of the ________ Tracy movie at the box office, and of course, the Roger Rabbit tragedy between Spielberg and Eisner, all these awesome ideas never got past the drawing boards. The thing is, it seems like they were really serious with these ideas. They wern't just floating around in "blue sky". As awesome as Sunset Boulevard currently is, it is sad that none of these great ideas never got out.
My question: Couldn't they have still used some of these ideas?? Ok., ________ Tracy didn't do so well. But did they have to theme it to ________ Tracy? Why not change it to, say, a James Cagney movie or something? Heck, it wouldn't even have to be themed to an actual movie, it could just be themed to the gangster genre as a whole.
Then there is poor Roger Rabbit. Yes, the area would have worked best with him as the main character. But couldn't they just replace him with, say, goofy? Just use some of their own characters. Yes, the classic Disney characters are not exactly, the "loony", "Tex Avery" type like they designed Roger to be, but I just think some of these ideas are too cool to throw away.
And then there is the light rail. Well, I guess the only excuse they had to leave this out was budget cuts. Otherwise, this would be an awesome way to get around the Studios.
Mabey some of these ideas are still being considered. Any thoughts? Opinions?
