The magic shop. Many of the stores were all different. Penny arcade. Now all store sell the same souvenir stuff. Also had a silent movie theatre you could walk into. Relaxing and cool. They played a rotation of silent movies.

One Little Spark...
I greatly miss the old Main Street USA. I understand Disney's need to include shopping (and enjoy shopping there), but at least at Disneyland California's Main Street USA, they seem to have kept more of the theming and fun little things.

For example, as a kid/teen going to Magic Kingdom, I used to love the Penny Arcade. Growing up in the 80s / 90s, video games and arcades were a part of my youth. I found it fascinating to see and play with these old "video games". Some of the machines were moved up into the train station when they remodeled it and removed the Penny Arcade...

However, at Disneyland, the machines and Penny Arcade theme is still there. Granted, it's now relegated to the entrance to a shop, but there are several machines, and I saw kids playing on them with the same curious wonder that I had when they used to be at Magic Kingdom.

WDW's Main Street is really just World of Disney with some food service locations. Nothing all that special. :(

...but it used to be! I remember it being the first exciting step into the park! I stared in awe of the castle at the other end... Then i would go to the emporium not to buy stuff, but to look at the moving window displays... Then go see steamboat Willie at the Main Street Cinema... Then cross the street to the PENNY ARCADE where i would watch an old Chaplin diaporama, listen to the playing band machine and get my fortune for the day... Then cross over to the magic shop to walk my invisible dog... And after that eat my toll house cookie and it's off to Adventureland... Might not seem special to someone who hasn't seen it in those days... But I can guarantee you... It use to hold its own!

I'd have to agree - it feels like one long, interconnected merchandise store with some eateries mixed in. Looks great on the outside, but I tend to walk right on through and into the park.

Growing up in the 80's the magic shop on Main Street was my #1 souvineer destination every trip. I was always allowed to get a few new tricks each trip and I just could not get enough of that store.

Wow, I remember wanting a dog leash so bad. My dad made me one from hard wire. After i found out how they worked they lost their magic. I played in the Penny Arcade and loved the old kineticscopes. The silent movies of Mickey and Chaplin was always a cold place to relax. I cant remember if it was an A ticket or just a free ride. Wow. Those are very special memories. Thank you for sharing.
