Opinions on split reservations?

I've noticed a number of folks in the forum that split reservations between two resorts. I've never done this myself, so I was wondering: what's the specific reason you decided to do it, and did you think it was worth it afterwards?

We did a split stay for the first time on our trip in April. I think there are different reasons people sometimes go for split stays, for us we LOVE WL but with finances this year and it was a peak week we could not swing the cost of the full week there. So we stayed at POFQ for 5 nts and then went over to our home awayfrom home WL for 3 nts. This way we were able to get to disney for the week and still get to the hotel we love even if only for a few nts. It can be tricky if you are on the dining plan. We did POFQ, with tickets long enough for the full week, with DP for the 5nts we were there. Switched over to actually VWL ( got a great deal renting dvc points) since it was dvc I was able to add on the DP for the last 3 nts.

We had a car so it was easy to switch, though our room was not ready until later. I have been told disney will transfer the luggage for you.

We started going to WDW back in 1974 and always stayed at the Polynesian. Wanting to go back but not spend the money for an entire week, our party of 3 families split a week between POR and the Polynesian. Personally, I probably wouldn't do it again because I felt we spent a good bit of the day of transfer making certain all of our luggage (including refrigerated items) made it, checking in and settling in. I don't know if it would have been better if it had just been my husband and I instead of a much larger party. I have heard stories of it being very easy but for me, it was too much "park time" spent on the move.
