O.K. here it goes! Why does Disney keep making sequels to Classic movies! To me this just kills the original classic film and leaves nothing to the imagination as to what happened next. I just saw a commercial for Bambi 2 and my girls have watched others like Cinderella 2. I just don't think this should be something Disney should do. The storylines are weak and I know it is probably about the $$$, but I think it ruins the original's magic and the "they lived happily ever after" endings.

Anyway, does anyone else feel this way? (placing helmet on head and putting on flack jacket):lookaroun

the original were for a differnt generation which most kids today probably dont want to watch, so to 'redo' the story to bring in another audieince (ie$$) they make a sequel god forbid they make a snow white sequel

Terrible

The standard of the sequals has been the problem. Some have actually worked out OK, but IMO thats because they have room for a sequel.

Aladdin's sequel's all worked because they were more tales from arabian nights, so it didnt take anything away from the original just added to them.

Pocahontas, kinda worked as the original story tells of her going to England, however the whole love story was messed up with her falling in love with someone else, goes against what we learnt in the first film.

Beauty and the Beast's were bearable as they were more about how the characters spent Xmas at the castle so you could see it as a filler, filling in the gaps about what happed during the xmas they fell in love.

Lion King 2 was appaling, however Lion King 3 (or 1 1/2 to you guys in the US) IMO is one of the best Disney Sequels.

All the others have been really bad, with Lion King 2 and The Little Mermaid 2 taking top prize. I think Disney should stop production on Bambi 2, Brother Bear 2, the fox and the Hound 2. The Tinkerbell Movie could be good so thats one I will hold judgement on, Cinderella 3 could be OK, its a retelling of the first one, however the Step Mother find out about "Magic" and stops Cinderella from using it and we see how she the film turns out with out it (probably happily ever after but still an intresting concept).

Its a funny one to answer, if they are trying to bring classics to a younger audience why make sequels to modern classics, however even Disney must know that to make a bad sequel is betraying the audiences love of the Orginal. I.E. i cant enjoy the Lion King any more as im remended of Lion King 2, and how simular they are, hence associating it with a bad film.

Anyway I'll stop my rant. But good thread.

Excellent points! I agree about some sequels, but it really comes down to if the "sequel" is an original idea or just continuing the story. But, IMHO continuing the story for movies like Cinderella (esp.) is killing the kids dream of what happened next.

Good point, but my kids love the older movies "Classics" and they seemed to get bored with these sequels. I agree about the standard of them and I do not think that the new storylines or creator of these storylines has the passion or drive that created the original.

Though I'm not a fan of sequels for Disney animation, they are a stable income for Disney as a company...they generate much more money than a theatrically produced feature does and in a much shorter time span. The problem that has plagued the sequels was as much a lack of good storytelling as it was horrible artwork. The Aladdin sequels, tho taking from other tales, had horrible artwork and I didn't think anything could get worse until I saw the first Tarzan sequel (Tarzan and Jane, I believe) and it was even worse, I saw better stuff from students when I was in school for animation and then I saw Hunchback 2.....I'm not even going to touch that piece of garbage. Other sequels tho' have had some strong artwork Lion King 1 1/2 had good visuals (but I didn't care for it at all - the original had too much of an impact on me and the direction of my future in art), Cinderella 2 had some really well done feature quality work (I wasn't fond of the short story idea tho), but it did make a ton of money as did Lion King 1 1/2. Bambi 2..due out next week should be the highest quality sequel to date. I'm not that convinced of the story and for as much as I like Patrick Stewart, I'm not fond of the choice of him being cast as Bambis father. Andreas Deja, a lead feature animation animator, did the animation for Bambi and this is extremely exciting for me. Andreas is, in my opinion, one of the two best animators working in animation today (Glen Keane being the other). When he joined the Bambi 2 crew, he wanted the film to retain the high quality of the original and if there was anyone who would be capable of that quality...it was going to be him. He is attempting to fill probably the biggest shoes he's ever tried to fill in his professional career with this, but the man is a genius and I expect this film to do extremely well.

The sequels are probably here to stay...just not in the volume that we know them.
