online check in

First off, I apologize to all my fellow posters here for asking stupid questions all the time, but I'm doing my first WDW trip that wasn't planned by a parent or domeone else and I don't wanna screw anything up.
With that said, I'm about 10 days away from being able to do my online check in. Juat out of curiosity, what exactly does this do? Can I literally check in so that when I get down there in February, I just ride the magical express to my resort, throw my bags at a cm and jump on a bus to the Magic Kingdom? (I know its not that simple)
But really, what does it do as far as my trip goes?

Online check-in allows you to skip the lines and CM spiel. If you have "been there and done that" with the CM's at the front desk and do not need to hear the whole mess again, choose online check-in. You get to the resort and step up to a counter where they have everything already packaged for you. They give you the package and wish you a magical vacation. That's it.

If multiple parties are at the online check-in counter, you have to wait on line anyway. Still, it speeds up the process.

With Magical Express, your check in baggage is handled from the airline counter to the resort and you won't see it for a few hours after you check-in. Disney will mail tags to attach to your luggage. Make sure you have some essentials in a carry on, else you end up milling about waiting for your things. I have a personal flying dress code (I'm old school) so I always pack pool clothes, that way I can check-in, strip down, and dive right in.

I have done the on-line check-in the last few times and it is great. You can almost as you said, throw your bags at a CM and head off to MK. I recommend it. See what you think.

Haha! Upon your recommendation I shall throw my bags at a CM once I get to my resort! :) I think I might just do the normal check in though. I've used the KTTW cards before but not the MB, plus its my girlfriends first trip to Disney, it might be a good idea for her to learn her way around all this too. Cause she's planning the next trip. (Even though she isn't aware of this fact yet.)

This link should help, but here is the Reader's Digest version. If this is your first trip to WDW, DO NOT do online check in.

Even if it is your first trip, there are almost unlimited online WDW resources (including this one) to bring you up to speed on your chosen resort, all transportation, dining options, and of course, all the parks. If someone is desirous of doing an online check-in, surely doing some basic homework in advance is more than sufficient preparation and should not preclude anyone from taking advantage of that pre-trip opportunity.

All that sounds great on paper, but the results I have personally witnessed when people try that approach is much different.

Online check in might save you a few minutes in the check in line. If all the stars align perfectly I could see in saving you 15-30 minutes tops. That is it. No other perk exists. Is that 15 minutes worth not understanding how something in a vacation package you spent thousands of dollars on works? I think not.

It is designed for those that know the ins and outs of every aspect of a WDW vacation. Not someone who is going to WDW for the first time.

I go in 15 days. And I decided not to do it. I know most of it already, but my gf has neverbeen so I want her to get it all straight in her head too . And I figure being there during the slow season it won't be crazy and can probably miss next to no time doing it this way.

I haven't been to WDW in over 20 years but will return in a few months. Clearly, a LOT has changed in the interim and I have been able to learn whatever I need via the internet. Your small sample size of observations has no way of detecting how many of the WDW newbies out there who have successfully combined online check-in with online advance homework. It can work for many. Your statement "DO NOT use online check-in" is disingenuous and misleading.

The "small sample size" is only what I site in that article. The actual sample includes hundreds of clients from when I was a Disney TA.

I stand by my statement that first time visitors should not use online check in simply because it is based on a good deal of evidence and experience. It is no more disingenuous or misleading that saying someone that has read a bunch of books on Europe, but never been there, is a European travel expert.

Just did the online check-in for our trip next week to POR. I'd hoped it would let me put in an actual written request (Magnolia Bend mansions, facing the river) but I could only pick from two of four options - corner room, first floor, second floor, highest floor. I picked corner room and highest floor.

I did send POR a fax earlier this week with the more specific request for Magnolia Bend, so our fingers are crossed they can make it work!

Hmmhen I might not do online check in. It might be good for my BF (who's pretty much block out all my Disney rambling) to hear a spiel from a CM.

The resorts no longer accept faxes and haven't for a few years. You might get lucky and reach a CM that looks in it, but the lion share end up in the trash. If you have a specific request, call the reservation center and have it put on your reservation ASAP.

I'm 57 days out and hope to try the online check in. First of all, can I do it or no? We have two rooms booked and one of them's under my Mom's name. If I could, I'd do it on Monday since I don't have to go to work. Also, if we do online check in, can we possibly see about checking in early? Thanks. :)

We booked through a travel agent so he added a note on our reservation -- I assume/hope that'll work just as well!

But this article doesn't really explain what first-time visitors would be missing by using the online system... I have been researching the heck out of everything I can think of related to our trip in early June... I feel like I have a good handle on the way the magic bands work and have been to WDW before, just not as the responsible party (all other trips were with my parents, when I was under 18). Is there really that much mystery to all of this that I wouldn't be able to figure out or ask about if need be? I only ask because we may be getting to the hotel a few hours before the 3 pm check in, and I have read that they are more likely to have a room ready if you do the online check in early.

That was my thought too...

15-30 minutes may not seem like a big deal, but are the check-in lines really that short on a consistent basis? If we are checking in on a Sunday, maybe this won't be as big of a deal (since typically, Sunday at most hotels is a bigger check-out day than check-in), but I thought I had read somewhere that the check in lines do tend to get fairly long.

It *might* be worth mentioning here that we are going for our anniversary. I've already called and had a note made on our reservation about the occasion, but would we possibly be risking missing out on a benefit of that notation by checking in online?

The reason I recommend that a first timer or infrequent traveler not use online check in is two fold.

1: In spite of extensive research, you just might not know or remember everything. Is it really worth possibly missing something to save yourself a few minutes? I know no matter how well prepared I thought I was for a test, I liked to read over the material just once more before I took it. You have more than likely just dropped 4 figures on a vacation. A last minute review of what you have coming to you just might help you to get the most out of your trip.

2: Simply out of respect for the others in line. The online check line is designed for people to grab their packets and go and is staffed accordingly. When you run into a guest that has done online check in and has questions, the line comes to a screeching halt and can make the online check in line longer than the regular one. I would never want to be "that guy" and I suspect most other people would not either.

If online check in saved saved you a ton of time, got you an ADR at Be Our Guest, of a free fast pass I would tell everyone to use it. The reality is that online check in is not that gigantic of a perk. At absolute most your room might be ready a bit earlier, and that is a big might. I have noticed that it has increased the frequency that our room has been ready, but it is also worth noting that we rarely to never make special requests. That more than anything helps in getting a room early. If you are checking in around 3 your room will most likely be ready regardless of if you use online check in or not.

All it online check in really does is save someone from having to hear their vacation packet explained from them and, in theory, provides a shorter wait time because all the people in line should just be grabbing and going.

Since nearly 100% of resort guest use express check out, very few people will clog up lines checking out of the resort. Those that typically are there are disputing a charge on their bill. Check out time is also at 11:00, so you will be well past if it if you are getting in around 2-3.

As far as perks go for an anniversary, the only one there is are celebrating buttons. Those will typically be in your packet no matter which way you check in if it has been noted on the reservation.
