Online Check In- Credit Card?

So online check-in is now available to me- but it won't let me complete it unless I add a credit card for possible charges etc.
Is this the only way you can do online check-in? I'm not bothered about adding a card and would prefer not to. I had wanted to check-in to make room requests and add a birthday- is this not possible without having to add a credit card? Or can I do this by phone?

I don't think they'd let you check in without a cc holding the room... I think that's pretty standard.

I've checked in at the actual front desk on the last two trips without a credit card- they just asked if I'd like to or not- was just wondering if for the online check-in that a credit card is the only way you can do it...

No you should not need a credit card for online check in BUT that just means you will take a bit longer at the desk when you do check in. Should not be a big deal. You don't have to give them your card number. Many people pay cash when they check in.

I did this very thing last September. I got all the way thru the online check in and did not put my card in but was surprised when we arrived and found that all I needed to do was supply the card and we were all set.

Also as a side note, if you're looking to add room requests like view/location/etc, online checkin is not the time to be doing that. Room requests like that should be noted on your reservation when you book, or call Central Reservations and have them add them on. Don't wait until you try to check in online.
