Haha that is exactly what it sounds like...it also makes my heart skip a beat sometimes cause I think someone is picking up!

me too!!!

I don't get why it has to sound so bad. it's maddening. Luckily i wasn't on hold too long, but geez, c'mon Disney!

I thought I was the only person this happened to. When the Stay Play and Dine packages came out for 2014 I was on hold for at least an hour, every time that dang music stops I thought someone was going to pick up. But nope, just another song or too much static it cuts itself out

It's bad enough when the only songs I have heard while on hold is either Golden Dreams, Small World, Soarin or Ellen's Energy Adventure score.

I have never understood this!! It is always in-and-out and faded. I know it's not an issue of "Oh, no technology exists to make it better" because my law firm has hold music that is clear as a bell. So, they must opt for it? But the question is why?

Telephones were built and optimized for voice and not music. There are EQs that filter out unwanted frequencies in order to accentuate voices. Music has a broad frequency range and a lot of times when the music goes in and out it's the song hitting a certain frequency that is being blocked or pulled back.

Another reason music sounds terrible is caused by the amount of bandwidth granted to phone calls. The standard for GSM phones is around 14 kbit/s. That's less than a 56k modem. A standard MP3 or AAC now a days usually has a bit rate of 192 kbit/s.

Although for Disney phone support I imagine them just setting down the phone next to speaker that is pumping in Disney Tunes non stop.

An example of bit rates.

I'm not sure Disney has updated there on hold music hardware in while. Even about six years ago, my former employer (also a fortune 500 company) was using a big PBX system where the hold music was a loop audio tape. Sometimes the high volume call centers are the last ones to get the phone systems updated because of the downtime required.

I have noticed this for years! And I know what you mean about your heart skipping a beat when it cuts out and you think someone has picked up.
