Old News, But W/E

Hmmm... Gameboy DS, which is essentially an Advance with another screen and stylus...

Or Sony PSP, which has more computing power than the PS2, can play MP3s, movies and full-on 3-D graphics.

Um... I think I know which one I'll be getting...

I'm going with DS. A portable system with CD based media is one of the worst ideas in the long sad history of bad ideas. Besides, I'm a Nintendo fanboy. Though I have a PS2, I only use it for Kingdom Hearts, though I'll be getting KH2 and the new Godzilla fighting game.

And the Nintendo DS is only $150...compared to the PSP, which is...?
That still hasn't been announced, but if people are going to pay 400 dollars for an IPod, I don't see the problem in spending 250-300 for the PSP.

The problem with the movie playing is that you would have to buy movies only on the UMD format for PSP watching, and that battery life when watching movies is limited to 2 hours, meaning you can't get long movies like LOTR or Star Wars on the PSP. Besides, DS has wireless gameplay ranging from a short distance like 30 feet, to across the country. And the gameplay for most of the games is pretty innovative.

You're comparing two different things to make your point on why DS is better? That doesn't make sense.

And if someone buys the PSP for ONLY watching movies, then they are dumb.

Yeah, I admit my comparison wasn't valid... though DS will probably have some form of personal video playing, like those GBA Video cartridges that are out now. I hear that they are working on GBA Video carts that could hold up to 90 miinutes of video.

I'd like to see a GBA do this:

If I had a desire to be cool and part of the "in" crowd, I'd buy a "lets have a hand in everything" SONY

If I wanted new and innovative ways to play games, then I'd buy Nintendo.

Nokia have already tried the "eveything in one package handheld" (twice), and it didn't exactly set the world on fire did it?

I read an interview awhile back, I'll have to try and find it again, with the President of Nintendo who stated that the DS will be only a game system, not something for personal video playing. They designed and built it for pure gaming capability.

The N-Gage failed because of three reasons... 1) It was marketed more as a cell-phone when it was first introduced... 2) It had NO third party support, what-so-ever, which forced its limited game library to be far from decent; and 3) It was frickin' Nokia!

Sony has a MASSIVE advantage in comparison considering it already has over 30 games announced, over 8 different game publishers developing for it, as well as one of the most impressive spec sheets ever drawn up, not only for a hand-held, but for any gaming device. Yeah, Sony dabbles in everything, but considering over 85% of what Sony does is a success, I don't see a problem with it.

The PSP is different in that it has WAY more optioins than the DS. Even though the DS is unique, most publishers are still very unsure of how to even utilize the second screen. It's innovative, I'm not arguing that, but how useful is it? Even if I don't play my PSP that much, at least I can still use it as an MP3 player. The DS would get playtime for 6 months, and then move into a drawer, just like what happened with the Advance and Color before it.

I respect Sony's first true jump into the portable gaming market, but Nintendo has controlled it for 15 years. Sony's going to have a hell of a time to get PSP as the top dog in Handheld console sales.

How many of those DS games are ports, or games that are actually being developed for the Advance, but are coming out after the DS's release?

That's what was thought when they introduced the Playstation, but now at least 1 in 4 homes have Playstation/Playstation 2 and effectively dominate the home console market. So, it is entirely possible that Sony could have a repeat if they handle this right.

I'm going to stick with the PSP. I never had the "urge" to buy a PS2, so this will be my first go with a Sony gaming system. I'm staying away from the DS because I like the features the PSP has.

Nintendo used to be great....but the GameCube could have been much better. I have never been a fan of it....the only reason I bought one was because of the WWE games, along with that Universal Studios Theme Park Adventure game.

Yeah! Head inside for more information about the DS. I’m a happy man…

There you are. The upcoming Nintendo DS will make its worldwide debut in North America on November 21 and after that in Japan on December 2. The price of the unit will be at $149.99, much lower than the $199 rumoured. DS will be the first Nintendo system to make a debut outside its home, Japan.

"Nintendo's mission remains unchanged: expand the game experience," Satoru Iwata, president of Nintendo Co., Ltd stated. "Nintendo DS is the road map to the future of video games, and most clearly demonstrates the type of innovation that players demand."

Moreover the Nintendo DS comes with the PictoChat application built-in. Yes sir. You are reading right. PictoChat was already rumoured to be embedded in the system hardware and now it is officially confirmed. This application allows DS owners to write messages with an on-screen keyboard or the stylus and send them wirelessly to other DS users nearby. Nintendo DS in sleep mode can spring to life if another DS is in transmitting range so the users can communicate.

"Each time Nintendo creates a hand-held, it introduces new elements of play and sets a new standard for mobile gaming," Larry Probst, EA's chairman and CEO said. "The DS is no exception - Nintendo has another big winner with the DS."

Nintendo DS has a flip-top cover that can protect both screens. It has two speakers that let users hear surround sound, while its dual screens opens new ways to play games. Nintendo DS sits 148.7 millimetres (5.85 inches) wide, 84.7 millimetres (3.33 inches) long and 28.9 millimetres (1.13 inches) tall (with the cover closed). The new media format for games has no moving parts that could be misaligned if the unit is dropped or jarred and also gives the DS a long battery life.

Right now, more than 100 companies have signed on to create games for DS, while Nintendo itself is developing 20 titles. Electronic Arts, the world's largest independent software developer and publisher, has announced that its powerhouse franchises of Madden NFL, The URBZ: Sims in the City, Need for Speed Underground, Tiger Woods and GoldenEye will be available for the Nintendo DS platform.

Update: According to USA today the Nintendo DS price, includes a copy of the game Metroid Prime Hunters: First Hunt, the demo version of Metroid Prime Hunters. Not to be confused, the PictoChat application will be built-in the hardware, whereas the Metroid Prime Hunters: First Hunt will be a Game Card that you can insert in the DS software port. That's really a nice move from Nintendo and with that low price we can expect some very strong sales of the hardware.
