Trip Report Old Disney World Virgin

I'm 54, and my wife and I have never been to Disney World

So why are we going? I always thought it was a kiddie park, so never gave it thought, but I had been catching coworkers talking about it, so I asked, and they are pushing me to go. I looked into it and discovered how generous Disney is towards military, even retired military, and with my airlines points almost expiring, we decided to pull the trigger. We are way way way overdue for a vacation, and as we explore sites like this and various youtube videos, we are getting really excited about our decision.

We are flying out on 9 Sep, and using a 5 day park hopper, 10-14 Sep. Our airline points paid for the flight for my wife and I. Shades of Green had a room available for all but the last night, so we will switch to the Poly for the last night, which also had a military discount, and got a generous deal on the park hopper passes through the "Salute to Military" special. We wouldn't have been able to pull this off if it wasn't for the stars aligning with the points and specials.

I feel like I did my homework and got the Magic Bands in the mail, scheduled fastpasses and made a few dining reservations... just made a recent discovery though, I was puzzled why MK closed early a couple days, at 1800?... I thought they had fireworks every night? Then I read something about the Halloween parties... Bingo! it all made sense. We purchased a party ticket for the Sunday when we arrive, now we have something to do that evening before our park hopper tickets are in effect :) Bonus!

We are not getting a rental car... we need to figure out transportation to Shades of Green from the airport, but because we are staying at Poly the last night, we can use the shuttle from Poly to get us back to the airport.

One lesson learned I can already note: this isn't a vacation that should be booked on a short notice whim. I missed the planning window on some of the restaurant reservations and fast passes. I keep checking though, and was able to snag the Ohana breakfast as it surprisingly popped up just a couple days ago... still watching for Be Our Guest. The only fastpass we couldn't get was the Avatar Flight, but we will go early and wait the regular line. Can't complain, I think we did pretty good considering the fairly short notice.

I bought my wife a Stitch doll (her fav Disney char) and a shirt through the online Disney store to help build the excitement... I think it's working as she already has her suitcase contents all spread out in the spare bedroom, ready to be packed.

It was also a nice surprise to read about Epcots food and wine fest going on... looking forward to that.

I'll try to keep this report going as we make discoveries, and thanks to everyone for sharing the loads of information here!

How fun!!! Disney is def not just for kids. My husband and I have gone 5 times with just us and its always been amazing! As far as Be Our Guest, I learned a trick (for lunch) on here that worked for my upcoming October trip. I was able to get two single reservations within 10 minutes of each other! Maybe that will bring you some luck as well!

The Halloween party is awesome! The party starts at 7 but they will let you into the park at 4 with your party ticket. As a fellow Stitch lover, let your wife know that you can meet Stitch dressed as Elvis at the party this year! And don’t be afraid to trick or treat!!!! They give you a bag (I also bought the ”official” party bag) and there’s no judgement on adults getting candy. (And it’s good candy too!)

Hope you guys have a magical time and I’ll be following along!

You are going to have a great trip. There are online tools to find reservations late. Touringplans has one. Your wife will also enjoy the 'Ohana breakfast.

If I ever meet you winstongator, I owe you a beer... the touringplans tip worked like a charm, snagged the perfect day and time for the Be Our Guest reservation in just a few hours... cheers!

First trips to WDW are really magical. Be sure to take in the sights (in MK for example, that first walk down Main Street USA--and your first view of Cinderella Castle--is epic for everyone . . . )

There are so many wonderful things to see at all the 4 parks, and you'll come to realize that you can't see if all in one trip. So you might as well plan a return trip after this one now, because you will be going back!

Happy to help. 2 years ago we were there a bunch in the Fall, but this year it'll be the end of October before I get there. Enjoy the trip. One more tip is not to worry about seeing everything. One, things change, lots is being added. Two, you'll likely be back sometime to see anything you're upset about missing.

Wow I love your first timer excitement, Im in. There is so much brilliant info on this site and generally everyone is really helpful, the Halloween party is a lot of fun, we are from the UK so trick or treating for American candy was great, don't miss the Halloween parade and fireworks, they only happen on party nights and are different from the everyday parade and fireworks, I like to look at the park maps online and pre-plan my routes around the parks to try and avoid wasting time zig zagging around. As others have said you won't see and do it all but don't let that bother you and stop, sit on a bench relax and people watch, take it the little details, there is lots. Ohhh and try to avoid food & wine on the weekends it's is much busier then.

As for making dining reservations, in addition to using Touring Plans (love that site!), look on the disney app a day or two before the meal you want to book. I have often had really good luck changing times on reservations close to day of, because that is when people need to cancel them to avoid the no show fee. Same thing with FP. The day before our last day in the parks we decided to change our plans for the next day and I cancelled our FOP FP. I'm sure we made two people very happy 😀. Enjoy!

I went to WDW once when I was 9, once when I was 34 and then 18 more times since I turned 38! I'm pretty sure you'll have an amazing time. I do my best to convince any adults who will listen to me that children are definitely NOT required to visit and thoroughly enjoy WDW.

Eat, Drink and see Mary (Poppins - she hangs out in the UK in EPCOT right behind the tea shop)!!

Enjoy!

Just a couple planning updates:

Found a really cool place to put our dog up while we are gone... this was a major concern for us on the decision to take a vacation. Moe is our English Bulldog, and he is such a big baby. We found a pet resort nearby though that really is set up like a resort... we had a shopping list of activities to choose from, such as pool time, park play time, and even nightly belly rubs and story telling. I'm wondering now who is getting the better deal.

I stumbled on another post here by Leigh51 asking about Disney Shops Flower & Gift room delivery... oh, I'm scoring so many points this year :) We are arriving on our Anniversary and I will have have flowers, bubbly and treats waiting for us in the room. I should score some belly rubs and story time for myself with this move.

Bags are packed, just two more days at work... so hard to concentrate.

DAY 1, 9 Sep - OFF TO DISNEY

Off to the airport, but we had to make a stop on the way to drop our boy off at the doggie resort... the toughest part about taking a vacation was leaving our boy behind.

We were flying Southwest from BWI to MCO. I remembered to check in 24 hours prior to flight to get a good boarding number to ensure DW and I were sitting together. We got B15 and B16 boarding passes, so no problems.

We arranged transportation from MCO to Shades of Green through Sunstate. They had someone waiting for us at baggage claim with my name on the placard. The driver carried our bags for us, and seemed like a nice guy, dressed well and was very courteous. The cost for the ride was $60. It was so easy, I felt it was worth it.

Today was our Anniversary, so I ordered some flowers and gifts from the Disney Floral & Gift shop, and they were waiting in the room upon our arrival. DWs eyes watered up, so I knew I had scored some points :)

Shades of Green is really nice, the rooms are very large and clean. We have zero complaints about our stay here... the rooms were quiet, and were always serviced by the time we made it back. They were still renovating, with work currently happening on 2nd floor.

We unpacked only enough to change into some shorts, then headed out to catch the Halloween party at the Magic Kingdom. From Shades of Green, we walked 10-15 minutes to the Poly and caught the Monorail to MK. We saw a small alligator in the pond next to the walking path... also saw lots of turkey and some deer on property throughout our stay.

MK was decorated up for Halloween... we entered the park about 5:30PM, and the main street seemed pretty crowded. I think we were catching the earlier crowd leaving for the 6PM closing, mingling with the arrival of the Halloween Party crowd.

We were pretty hungry, so we stopped at the first place we found for some food, Casey's... pretty good hot dogs. It was crowded, but managed to find a table after a few minutes. DW said the mint-lemon aid was pretty good, but I'm not a mint fan, so took her word for it.

With our bellies full, we headed out to explore... for no reason at all, we took a left at the castle and came across the Robinson's (?) tree house... based on some story I was only vaguely familiar with, but DW was very familiar with the story and was excited to explore. It was an impressive setup, and the massive tree looked very real.

We then stumbled on the Pirates of the Caribbean... it was after 6PM now, so the place was looking pretty empty. The wait sign said 10 minutes, but there was no wait, we walked straight up to the boat and got in. This was a fun ride.

Next we found Splash Mnt... this was one of my favorites. Again, there was no wait to ride. We purchased the Disney Memory Maker, so had access to all the ride pics... here is a fun pic from Splash Mnt... we are the couple in the back seat.

There was also no wait for the Big Thunder Railroad... DW is normally not a Coaster fan, but she loved this one and wanted to go on it again.

Haunted House was next... the line wait sign said 25 minutes, which I didn't mind... it was feeling like we were flying through the rides too fast, and actually enjoyed the break to allow some anticipation build. It took about 15 minutes to get to the stretching room. Another fun ride :)

About the time we made it to Fantasy Land, it started to rain, so we hit both Peter Pan and It's a Small World across the street from each other. There was a small wait, but we didn't mind because we were dry. Cute rides. The rain had stopped by the time we made it through these rides.

We stopped at Gaston's Tavern because DW wanted to try the LeFou's Brew we saw in a youtube video... it was good, but too sweet to drink all of it, or even much of it.

We decided to call it an early night to pace ourselves. We were a bit tired from the day of traveling and we knew we had an early day tomorrow as our plan was to use Animal Kingdom's morning EMH (8AM) to try Pandora's Flight of Passage without a long wait, one of two rides we were unable to get Fast Passes for.

We almost made it to the exit as we noticed the parade was about to start... we found an open street side position, so we stuck around to view the parade. Glad we did, it was fun.

As we were walking back to Shades of Green from the Poly, a bit sweaty, my legs felt like they were beginning to chafe. I did not consider this prior to our trip, and did not add anything on our packing list to help. I shared my worry with DW when we got to the room... she went to her bag and pulled out a stick of Gold Bond. I think she saved the trip for me... I used the stick every time before heading out, and never had an issue.

I'll get our Day 2 report up in a bit.
