Legendary Disney Feature Animation artist Burny Mattinson has died at the age of 87. At his passing, he was still employed with Walt Disney Animation Studios was going to be the first cast member to receive an award for 70 years of service at the company. At Walt Disney Animation, he worked his way up the rungs in the animation department in the 1950s through 1970s working alongside Walt’s Nine Old Men like Ollie Johnston and Eric Larson. He would transition to directing, writing and producing with “Mickey’s Christmas Carol” and “The Great Mouse Detective”. From the Eisner years on, he transitioned back into the Story department where he worked on most of the Renaissance films including “Beauty and the Beast”, “The Lion King” and “Mulan” to name a few. He has credits on films as recent as the 2011 Winnie the Pooh, “Big Hero 6” and last year’s “Strange World”. Burny was an important link between several eras of Disney Animation and was a valued colleague and mentor at the studio. In addition to some posts from social media, I am including a multi part interview former Disney animator turned director Clay Kaytis (“The Angry Birds Movie” and “The Christmas Chronicles”) did with Burny in the aughts. That’s definitely a great listen for aspiring animation artist and animation fans alike. (Episodes 16-19)
