What ever happened to the disney channel?
up until a couple years ago, they used to play cool stuff like vault disney, the old wonderfull of disney shows and classic animation, imagineering clips, like i remembered seeing test track and california adventure.
now all they play is those stupid teenie movies.
i think they should have a classic disney channel,id be even willing to pay a subscription on my cable for it.
i even remember the 80's,when they used to broadcast music concerts.
disney needs to pay attention to the older generation not just cater to the young adolescence to teen age groups.
there is an audience for the classic disney material.

Topic is kindof beating a dead horse... but, well, you're quite right.

When did Disney start catering to only specific age groups? Outside of *maybe* The Mickey Mouse Club (but even that's a stretch) it wasn't until after the death of Walt... Disney's all about copying themselves whenever things work, so what happened here? Why didn't they continue the successful formula of catering to everybody?

And as far as copying goes, why do they copy the success of the Cartoon Network, but won't touch the success of long standing channels such as Turner Classic Movies and (the now sucky) AMC?

The fact is, they don't seem to trust their classic material enough. :(

YOur right, I remember they used to play a lot of cool stuff on the Disney Channel. Now half the time is a little on the corny side. I love the old Disney cartoons, they don't play them that often any more.

I hear ya. Even on Toon Disney they have now reduced the showings of HOM. I would love to see some of the classics like:

That Darn Cat
the Witch Mountain movies
gy DA
Herbie movies
Mary Poppins
Classic Disney cartoons
and many more.

We have some of these on video or DVD but not many. I would like my DD to experience some of these great family movies and cartoons that I grew up with.

that age group watches the most tv, so thats the easiest way for them to get good ratings

Not only would I willingly pay real money to get back the old Disney Channel, but I'd even pay a few dollars more if it meant I didn't have to see those idiotic scroll bars and animated station logos at the bottom of the screen. I mean, come on. Most satellite/cable networks tell you what channel you're on when you flip to it. Do I need to keep being reminded? I don't think I've gotten that dumb in my older age. I'll even pay them a couple more dollars a month if they would go back to showing commercials only between shows. I'm sure these have all been mentioned in previous threads, but it's worth mentioning again.
This whole thing strikes me the same way as EPCOT's downslide. They took a great, quality product and because it wasn't getting the numbers they wanted, they dumbed it down to the point where the lowest common denominator (and its 4-year olds) would be interested. I'm not saying either were highbrow, but they educated as well as entertained. Now, we get junk like Raven marathons, Test Track, Lizzie McGuire (this may be spelled wrong; I don't really care), and Journey Into Your Imagination with Figment.
Really old man tirade coming up: This is yet another reason I miss the '80s. I don't miss Reagan one bit, but the music, the theme parks, the TV shows, the movies...everything seemed to be of such a higher quality and standard. And when I was a kid we didn't have these sell-you-lar phones. We had two tin cans tied to a string and we loved it. We were ignorant, ear-cut-up, hoarse from screaming into cans idiots and we loved it. Flibbedy floo!

I only wished i had a dvd burner back in 2000 & 2001 to record some of these great programs before they were going to be lost forever, locked inside the vaults of the disney studios.

''Bring back EPCOT circa,1985 & 1987"

The problem is that Disney is putting all of these classic films out on DVD or rereleasing them in "special edition" format. Do you really think that the marketing department is going to say "hey lets put these movies out on the Disney channel where average joe schmoe can record them at home"? Not going to happen. I know that all of my original copies of these movies are showing their age and in some cases can't even be viewed anymore. For those of us that grew up watching these clasics on Beta and VHS and want to see them now (and share them with our children, nieces, nephews, etc) this means buying them when they come out on DVD. But hey, at least Disney is putting them out on DVD so we can have access to them. After all it's a step in the right direction!

Okay, stop harassing me!

Yes, I watch and enjoy "That's So Raven", the "Halloweentown" films, and the "Zenon" series.

Boy, I feel better now...

"That's so Raven...it's the future I can see...That's so Raven...so mysterious to me! Yeah...."

Thank you I agree with you. I get tired of the stupid logos & the scroll bars. I loved the old Disney Channel & the old Disney cartoons. I'm only 26, I grow up with the really cool Disney Channel. It's nothing now compaired to what it was.

But they do show them on the Disney Channel...sometimes within a few months of releasing or re-releasing or re-re-releasing or re-re-re-releasing a movie. Look at "Lion King 1 1/2." That sucker came out on DVD last February, I believe, and by June they had already shown it on both the Disney Channel and Toon Disney. Granted, it's not a "classic" by any stretch of the imagination, but they do it with all of the movies they release on DVD. And if they don't show it first, Starz! will. At least there it will be shown mostly commercial, logo, and scroll free.
The specials and so forth are a different story, but at least they are slowly trickling them out on DVD.

I believe this is required by some television law. It is called "station identification" and they are required to identify their station every half hour (or between some amount of time, but I'm pretty sure its every half hour). Of course, I think they identify their station a little too much. Although I don't have the Disney Channel, I remember watchin it during vacations and it seems like all the logos popping up are fairly big. I say have a transparent logo, so as not to distract from the show ... but of coruse, Disney seems like be all about advertising and making money these days :(

agreed. Does anyone remember that show "Disney Inside out"? That was like the best show!!!!!

Is this the same program that was aired in the 1980s called Epcot Magazine? I remember when the Disney Channel first came on the air, oh like 1982 I believe, and for three years I think (or more) this program was a behind the scenes news show about Epcot and WDW I believe.

Think Dateline or those old "PM Magazine" (local broadcast) days on the tube.

I miss the old Disney Channel (and just read the other thread).

Heck I even taped off the Disney Channel back in 1992/93 a Harry Connick Jr. big band concert. Ah, those were the days.

Will those days ever return? A Classic Disney Channel (read: not Toon Disney) would do a body good.
