Good morning,

2 questions -
Is John Lasseter's winery worth visiting by Santa Rosa?
Can you tour Pixar studios in Oakland? If not, is it worth driving by?

There are no tours of Pixar Studios. If you happen to be in Emeryville, it is fun to drive by but I wouldn't go out of my way for it. You can't see anything from the outside other than the logo above the front gate.

For some odd reason, Disney does not offer general tours of their studios' to the general public, including Pixar Studios. If you have to go out of your way to drive by, I personally wouldn't do it, but if you really, really want to, by all means.

In the Bay Area you'll get your best dose of Disney at the Disney Family Museum. I highly recommend it.

Emeryville is on the way to Napa, so taking a 15 minute detour from the freeway to snap a few selfies in front of the Pixar gate is easy to do. I've never been to Lasseter Vineyards, but I have been to Glen Ellen (which is in Sonoma County not Napa), and it's beautiful there.

I would imagine it is the same reason that the production company Rooster Teeth had to stop giving tours of their studio in Austin a few years ago. There is so much going on that is still under wraps that you would either have to shut off every computer screen and hide every white board or limit the tour to the lobby.

I've been to Pixar Studios, and I have friends who work there. It's a beautiful campus but there isn't much to see or do besides watch people working at their computers. It's basically like any other big tech company office in the area.

There are soo many great vineyars and breweries in the napa/santa rosa area. You can't throw a rock without hitting one! But if your up that way another great thing to see is the Disney museum im SF.

We went to the Pixar gate last year when we were vacationing in San Francisco. It's easy to get to, and right on a street with plenty of parking right there, so it's not awkward or hard to jump out and take a few photos. And Fenton's Creamery is only about a mile or two from there and was the inspiration for this scene in UP. We went and had a nice dinner/dessert.

I'd also recommend the Disney Family Museum. You'll want to spend all day in the Disneyland room alone. My family literally had to drag me out of there.
If you happen to collect Disney Movie rewards, you can use them for admission to the Disney Family Museum now beforehand from the movie rewards website!

I thought of that, too, however, Universal most likely has the busiest studios/backlot, and they offer tours, both as part of the admission, and the VIP tour. I know it's possible to take a tour of the Walt Disney Studios, but you either have to know someone, or be a D23 member.

If I am not mistaken, they have very specific tour areas making it easier to control what is in them.

Guests go through a good chunk of the backlot. I've been on a few times where there was filming going on and we had to be quiet and the tram had to stop, cameras, huge lights, and boom mics included.

I see no reason why Disney can't offer tours of the Walt Disney Studios and others to the general public. You can tour the Jim Henson Studios in Hollywood, but they make you pay thousands of dollars first (it may include the Walt Disney Studios, too). They'd make lots of money if they offered tours, which is why I'm surprised they haven't jumped on the wagon, since they're always up for a cash grab.

We've been to the Disney Family Museum. It's VERY disappointing that you can't tour Pixar or Disney Studios :(

I agree. The Walt Disney Studios is beautiful, and very historic.

Are you a D23 member? If you're ever back in California, they offer tours to members.

If I got to tour Disney Studios I'd be like a kid in a candy store. Has anyone here seen the Reluctant Dragon? It's a film about a guy trying to pitch a story idea to Walt Disney Productions who evades his studio tour guide.

Disney has another film facility in San Francisco, LucasFilm, and its the same situation as Pixar... beautiful campus, but not much to see in the way of physical movie production.

I would love to take the tour too!

I'd join D23 just to do it.
