Tower of Terror is flat out my favorite ride at Disney World. I heard by various sources that it was updated on December 31, 2002. I heard they had updated it with more drops, there's air that blows in rider's faces, and there's a new smell to the place. I'm not sure if any of this is true, but hopefully someone can help me out. We're going in July and I was just curious about the park. Thanks if you can help.

In December of last year, the Tower of Terror was updated to include 4 different drop profiles that are randomly selected by a computer. Each different drop profile varies on the number of times it goes up or down and the extent of the various drops. For instance, two of the profiles will drop you first after you enter the "drop shaft"; the other two profiles start by shooting you up first after you you enter the drop shaft. Thus, you will never know if you will go up or down. All 4 profiles last about the same time and each is more or equally intense as before the update.

During each of the different profiles you can experience different effects. One uses large air cannons placed along the front of actual shaft to blast you with air during the drops. Others have "ghostly" figures that appear during the middle of the drop (look like mannequins placed inside the wall of the shaft that light up for a brief moment.....these figures are the ones from the preshow movie and each of the different drop shafts have a different figure). Another uses a movie screen (that was used at the very end of the ride previously) in the middle of the actual drop profile. Yet another produces a smell of burning rubber. Its all very cool and an incentive to ride it many times. You never know which drop profile you will get.

In addition, all ride vehicles are being/have been retrofitted with seatbelts instead of the lap bar. From personal experience, the seatbelts provide excellent "air time" and they actually increase the "terror" factor in that now you really don't have anything to hold on to. (Don't worry though, the seatbelts were added since they are actually safer :) )

Hope that helps.
