Jay Rasulo and Al Weiss unveiled today at the Magic Kingdom an extension of Disney's campaign for guest safety with illustrations and sayings that are mainly directed at children and their parents. Disney worked with Underwriters Laboratories (UL) to design the best "quotes". The 12 new illustrations that center on Timon and Pumbaa as they go through the park focus on things like not sitting on the ropes or banisters in queues, holding on to your belongings on rides, staying with your family/group, wearing sunscreen, etc.

Disney will be placing these illustrations in brochures, maps, and even children's coloring books over the next few months

To see the illustrations, go to: http://www.laughingplace.com/News-ID10016840.asp?Headline=1&Date=5/22/2003&Section=

I think it is a creative way of reaching out to kids and parents about doing easy, sensible things to have a safe stay at Disney. :)

Didn't they used to use Jiminy Cricket for this on the wdw info radio station??

I think so. But I also think Timon and Pumbaa will help the little kids. They are very noticeable as well as likeable by both kids and adults and should prove to be a nice fit in the parks.

Looking through all the pictures, it seems like at least 5 are directed at the adults. Especially the ones that say watch your children and my favorite one, "Let the cubs decide if they want to ride." I hate when I see parents forcing their children on a scary ride!

If I recall correctly, Jiminy Cricket was used more for environmental issues but that was in 98-99 and Millennium Celeb. so I might be wrong about it. ;)

So was this the big press conference that was supposed to happen in front of the castle? Did they mention Mickey's Philharmagic, or was this safety thing the big issue at hand?

Thanks for the info, though--looks good, not too tacky. I love Timon and Pumbaa.

Cool kids never listen to their parents and do whatever the heck they want. But now, it's TIMON and PUMBAA asking them to behave!!! They GOTTA listen!

I love how psychology works with them. I bet this new campaign will be a huge success and CMs won't have to say "Please get down from that tree" less times a day. :sohappy: :sohappy:

P.S: Did you notice how Disney managed to tie huge profits to a simple security campaign, selling activity books and creating special pins for trading?

Yea, that's kind of funny. I'm not sure though if they are actually selling anything. If I understand it right, the pins are for castmembers only. However, guests can trade their own pins for them if if they want, but guests can't actually buy them on their own. Also, I think the coloring books will be "free". For example, they may hand them out to kids at restaurants to color or at the waiting areas when the parents are checking in at resorts, etc.

Although, with Disney, anything is possible

Yeah, the pins will be only for trading... But we just KNOW they'll end up at eBAY!

He was also used on the WDW info radio station near the theme parks (some AM station). He told everyone to wear sunscreen and other safety stuff.

Those signs are really cute. I hope they hang the "not sitting on the rail and rope ones", in each cue line.

Disney did a nice job with them.
