New rooms at the Polynesian resort

The new rooms are beautiful, we stayed in 2 this past August. The Poly is our fav resort and we've stayed in rooms all over the resort. This August we had what we consider to be the primo building, Raratonga. It is right next the Great Ceremonial House so you are steps away from the monorail station, shops, both pools etc. Since Captain Cook's was being rehabbed this summer, the snack shop was moved to the Tangeroa Terrace which was at the other end of the building. Our room did not have much of a view (garden view) but the location more than made up for it. As I said, we've stayed all over the resort and had some fantastic views so a Magic Kingdom view was not necessary this trip.

Well the new rooms have actually been at the resort in some buildings since 2005 but most of them were finished last year. They were working all over the resort (not just the rooms) to redo everything including the shops, Captain Cook’s (counter service) and even replaced the wood exteriors to all the buildings and brought in all new furniture for the lobby. The Polynesian right now is one of the newest resorts at WDW with all the work they have done. Because of this a few weeks ago AAA did an inspection and gave the Polynesian a 4th Diamond rating that only the GF, Boardwalk, YC/BC have right now.

The rooms were already some of the largest on WDW property and now are some of the newest with handcrafted items from Bali, all new furniture and lighting as well as the same beds used at the GF and a 32” Flat panel LCD TV. The rooms were very comfortable and I love all the new items.

Rapa Nui is closed right now to have the exterior of the building redone and Tahiti is still waiting for some of the new items to get into the room but Tahiti is open right now. My favorite garden view location is Tokelau. All the rooms are considered garden view but many of them have views off to the side of the lagoon and even some you can see the castle and fireworks. Samoa and Fiji are also nice with all garden view category rooms but the views see things like the pool, marina, beaches and part of the lagoon for a garden view price.

I liked Raratonga because of its location. You walk out one side and you are in the GCH and then if you walk out the other side you are at the bus stop.

Let me just give you my opinion on the Polynesian in December. We have been going there for years but we decided to try Christmas at the Polynesian last December. It was nice to see and the Hawaiian Christmas music was fun but I will not be going back in December and if I did I would have to consider another resort. The cold weather, not being able to enjoy the beach and pool and the cold nights were just not the same as enjoying the torch lit paths on a warm summer night or sitting on the beach enjoying the warm weather. I went to the beach and almost froze and got blown away by the wind. If I had visited the Polynesian for the first time in a cold month I don’t think I would have returned. It was not even close to the same feel. On the other hand I don’t enjoy the camp fire at the WL in the hot summer. For us it helps the theme of the resort to have the weather to match.
