New monorail resort

In the 2001 Unofficial Guide to WDW, I read that Disney was palnning on creating a new resort along the monorail (between the Contemporary and the TTC) with a Mediterranean theme. Anyway, its supposed to be WDW's new flagship hotel (better than the GF) I heard about it somewhere else, too about a year ago, but not since then. Anyone got any info?

I have that book, and i don't remember reading anything aboutthat....

However, I know a ventian resort was planned, but last i heard they couldn't get a stable base for it......they were dumping dirt in there but the soil is just too wet.

The 5 original ideas for hotels were the Contemporary, the Polynesian, the Asian, the Persian, and the Venetian. The Asian was the only one that came close to being constructed until recent rumors about Disney having plans to build the Venetian. For more info on the original resorts go here:

Here is some info from WDWMAGIC:

5 May 1999: News in from inside WDW, thanks John.

The Venetian is not between the Contemporary and the Lagoon. That area is now called "Contemporary Shores" and was the site of "Rock and Rockets" last year. The Venetian is just out of the Transportation and Ticket Center monorail station, at about pylon 20 or so. It would be another monorail serviced hotel, although I'm not sure exactly where the station would be.

25 April 1999:

The long rumoured Venetian Resort may finally see construction start soon. This is to be Disney's flagship hotel, and will aim to reach the 5 star status narrowly missed by the Grand Floridian. It's location is on the Seven Seas Lagoon.

Thanks to Chuck for the following description

While taking a tour of the Fire Headquarters in Disney, I happened across a large blueprint that was titled, DISNEY'S GRAND VENEZIA RESORT. One of the firefighters described it as being "The new hotel across from the Contemporary, in the open field. It's supposed to be bigger and fancier than the Grand Floridian."

I don't know how accurate the rumors are, but it's been said for quite a while that the reason the Venitian was never built is the unstable nature of the soil in that area. I'm not sure I buy that; if they can build the MK on top of the utilidors, they should be able to make a stable foundation several hundred yards away...

I got the same story on the all day backstage tour about a year and a half ago. As we were drving by the site, I asked why they had not started construction and she said they keep pouring soil onto the plot and it keeps subsiding.

well then...

Question - if they can't build it there, is there somewhere else along the monorail route - maybe between EPCOT and the TTC - that they could build it?

I have ridden that portion many times, and it seems that there is plenty of space - just curious.

I recall hearing this rumor. I thought they said they wanted to build a stop at the AK lodge, but i may be wrong??? But I also remember they said they have not done any work on it and may not do the project???:brick:

Sorry to burst all your bubbles but I have learned from friends at WDW that there will not be a new monorail resort at least for a few more years. Disney does not want to spend the money on another resort now because the deluxe resorts are only 1/3 booked most of the time. They built(building) Pop Century because they found that people are not willing to spend that kind of money on a hotel room and because the Value resorts are always at least 75%-80% full.

I just partook in a Y.E.S. program on the 24th in World Showcase at Epcot, and as the only Senior on the trip I was talking to the guide , "Q" and I said that the Swan and the Dolphin kind of ruin the World Showcase when you look at it in the day. she said "Don't worry about it, they won't be there much longer."
I said "Wait, do you mean that they are tearing them down"
"Yeah, they're on Disney Property but they're not Disney Owned hotels."
This of course I already knew
"And they just want to do something better in the space."

Could this be where they are putting it? I would much rather see Disney build a five star resort that would be worth staying at as opposed to horses**t that they build like Pop Century. To me these are wastes of space. I still say that they should build an All Star Villain Resort.

I don't see them getting rid of the swan and carp. They are green lighted to spend several million dollars on rehab and adding more conference space. I wish they could get rid of them, they are an eye sore!

I agree. Walt Disney said that when you entered his park he wanted it to be like you entered another world. The swan & dolphin are an eye sore. The only reason they were built is because Disney signed a contract with the opperators and tried to back out of the deal and were going to be taken to court if they dident go through with it.

Simple reason that this would not be done. There is only one track. There is no seprate resort line running here. It would slow down the loop a lot. Not to mention that there would have to be an extra monorail running after park hours.

Don't hold your breath folks. The area in question, between TTC and the Magic Kingdom, across from the Contemporary, was just planted with rows and rows of evergreen saplings. Unless the 5 star resort is going to be built in trees about 50 years from now, I would say the plan is dead.

Another reason this would not happen is because the EPCOT line runs down the road to the MK Disney does not build resorts that close to a road, plus that road is to jammed with people going to the MK.

I keep telling people that there is not going to be another monorail resort.:hammer:
