New Magic Shop?

Back in 99, Copperfield was suppose to open his "underground" magic restaraunt/shop. He had a couple of windows made with the logo in DD. But, last I heard, it went under, and never really opened.

um....actually, the magic shop is already there. It opened I think a few months back (certainly in the past year). It's a very interesting place...from the outside, it looks like a pretty empty store (just books...), but once you go in...live demos galore!

Cool, I remember when I was a little kid and I would always buy something silly at the Main Street magic shop. I am glad that they have a new shop. I can not wait to check it out, I hope that it is still there when I go again.

The copperfield thing was supposed to be in the Studios to give them another sit down restaurant. But the deal never finalized. Even though posters were put up in the studios. It was supposed to open in 1998 or earlier.

If you are interested in magic, the best place I know is Mitsukoshi Shop at Japan Pavillion which besides toys, food and jewels sells a lot of great little magic tricks.

The shop is called Magic Masters and is actually a small chain - there are 4 stores in the chain and the DD one is actually the largest. The inside is a re-creation of Houdini's personal library. The DD store has been opened since at least last October. Very neat place too!

I don't know, I think they had the exterior of the building all set up to open in Downtown Disney. It was Christmas 98, when I did see it.

I knew it would never get off the ground, he's so over-rated.

I know for sure that it was supposed to be in the studios.

It was listed on the DD website for a w long time - so it may have been planned for MGM at one time, but it was also planned for DD. On Copperfields website it says that the backers of the rest. got a little scared of the idea because of the problems going on with other theme rests. even though it was not actually a theme rest, and that he hopes to still get it going in the future.
Also, Copperfield is by NO means over-rated, I am an amateur magician myself and have been yo 3 Copperfield shows this year, and he is nothing short of amazing.

Where did you find the information about the restaurant.

the restaurant was to be at MGM with an entrance inside and outside the park (like Rainforest Cafe at AK). It had signs where the mickey shop is at West Side because that was to hold Copperfield's Magic Underground merchandise, but the restaurant was to be at the studios

I wonder what the restaurant would have been like.

The information on the restaurant having the backers bale out was on www.davidcopperfield.com under the rumors section, but it is not there now - you can see the question pop up as you scroll through the rumors questions right after the question about David being gay - the question pops up for a sec and is then replaced by a question about The Russian Mob holding some of his equipment.
I don't know about the restaurant being at MGM but I know there was going to be one at DD West Side like I said earlier, not just a shop there, plans were to put a full fledged restaurant there too.

there's not enough room in the location they had the signs...these restaurants are all underground (thus, Copperfields Magic Underground), and I don't honestly see anywhere b/t West Side and Pleasure Island where they could have built it...

There used to be a Magic Shop in Fantasyland near the Castle called Merlin's Magic Shop. It suddenly dissapeared years ago.

How could you know that all of these restaurants were underground? Just because they were to be named that? None of them ever opened - they were just planned. I don't know where it was to be in DD West Side - I just know there were plans for it to be there. Anyway it never made it off the ground so it is irrelevant anyway.

Regarding the MGM, DD, Copperfield Magic Location

From what I understood at the time, and from what I heard from a cast member, it was BOTH.

There was supposed to be a restaurant at MGM, and a store at Down town Disney. It was by the corner of downtown Disney closest to the movie theater. I saw the logos on the window and it said coming soon. I asked a cast member, and he told me that the store would open together with a restaurant, (he didnt say the location of the restaurant). When the Copperfield agreement did not work out, both ideas were hacked. Logos on the windows at downtown disney, and the big poster at the entrance of MGM, were taken down.

Its a shame because it was a great idea.

I MISS THE MAGIC SHOP IN MAIN STREET, and the Penny Arcade.

Anyway, for all of you magicians out there, (although its not in disney) be sure you visit the Old Town Magic Shop located in Old town off of 192 in orlando. Its one of the best magic shops ive seen, and they carry EVERYTHING!.
Hope this helps.

I MISS THEM, TOO! They were shops that also served as attractions that were replaced by a store that sells polo shirts - as if they couldn't have squeezed that into the Emporium. :(

Next time you are in the area, check out Daytona Magic. They are a few times bigger than the Old Town shops and have a lot more cutting edge stuff at MUCH cheaper prices. Sadly, Old town is a bit of a tourist shop :(
