I love the Harry Potter and Wizarding World universe, but I don't understand this project. The movies were all nearly perfect. There are 7 other named schools of magic with different cultures that can be explored. There are other time periods that can be explored as well if they stick with Hogwarts. Why are they just remaking what has already been done and done well? There's SO much more they can do.

The Fantastics Beasts movies essentially tried to do that but didn't do all that well, so that might be what is has scarred from off from continuing down that route.

As you say, the original movies are so iconic it's going to be really hard to live up to that standard.

True that they tried something new with FB and it didn't go over so well. And we all wonder and complain about how they don't make anything original lol.

The movies were abridged versions of the books, as are most book to movie adaptions.

Plenty of material that hasn't been shown on screen.

The Fantastic Beasts movies were mediocre in my opinion. The new video game has been well received.

I'm fairly indifferent to this.

I'm very indifferent to this because I've come to love the movies as book companions. There are just a few things in the last book that I wish were included (Wormtail's demise, the role of the Centaurs and giants in the last battle) but most were absolutely great.

My take is this. We don't have Max (or whatever it is called). We would be VERY compelled to get it if they were to expand on the wizarding world with stories about other schools, different time periods, etc. But we don't at all feel the need to see a whole new rendition of what was already very well done. People complain about Disney remaking their animated classics in live action. HBO says :"hold my beer".

The question is will the masses accept a Harry Potter that is not Daniel Radcliffe
I'd say that's a legitimate question but would expand it to most of the original cast. How do you replace Dame Maggie Smith, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint?
That said maybe the under 12s when it's released may not be bothered but those that have seen the originals may not feel all the feels of the originals
At least Disney is remaking cartoons where people don't have attachments to the actors

Has casting changes stopped anyone from seeing the stage show?

The film franchise was brilliantly cast for the most part, but I don't have any qualms saying there are no doubt plenty of great actors out there who could do a great job as well.

If nothing else, hopefully Harry and Ginny will have actual chemistry. That was one of the few miscasts IMO.

Casting for 18 yr old chemistry has to be mostly luck when they're cast at 10/11. That said they had minimal chemistry

My thing is the cast (the cast we know have become the real-life faces of the wizarding world), but also whether or not this show will really have anything to add that is different. They even used the John Williams score in the announcement teaser. In my opinion, the only thing this show can do differently than the movies (with the exception of a few scenes here and there) is show the story from different characters' points of view AND have a ton of back story sprinkled in here and there. For example, show a backstory to the 4 founders, the marauders and the Order of the Phoenix, Snape/Voldy/Dumbledore's relationships, more Voldy backstory, etc. In other words, twist it around instead of doing a verbatim remake.

There was quite a bit cut from the stories compared to the books. I could see the expansion of the roles of House Elves and Ghosts but not enough to fill out several seasons

It's going to be quite jarring to have the same world of Harry Potter, the same Hogwarts, the same Hogsmead, the same music and everything but just different actors.

The shows is probably about two decades too early to be made.

Yes it will be rather weird. They are clearly setting things up to do with the Wizarding World what Disney is doing with both Star Wars and MCU by having several different shows and eventually more movies. However, I am not sure if they are going about things in the proper way. I guess we'll see.

The "tale of the prince" sequence in the book and movie with the rise and fall of Snape and his love for Lilly would make a FANTASTIC movie that would be an absolute smash with the right cast! If they want to start with something somewhat familiar without redoing everything, there are a bunch of backstories teased in the books.

There is so much untapped potential in the wizarding world.
