New contract

My wife was a member/owner when we got married, so I am not on her contract. We are tossing around the idea of adding more points (everyone always wants to come with us, and 2br villas don't come cheep.. even during 'Adventure' season..), and I have a few questions...

If I were to buy a contract, would we be able to pool the points for a single stay? Would it be considered a 'split stay'? Would it make a difference if I went aftermarket vs direct?

I understand why it is what it is.. but I wish that there was an easier (less costly) way than getting a lawyer involved to add me to her membership/contract..

Well, first, you don't need a lawyer to add you. DVC will assist you with getting added. From the DVC website:

What is the process required to remove or add a name on my Disney Vacation Club deed, or change the title on the deed to my trust?

Your Disney Vacation Club Membership is a deeded real estate interest and requires the preparation and recordation of a new deed to change how the Membership is titled. We would be happy to assist you preparing your new deed through a title agency.

Contact Member Administration for information on making a change to ownership on your deed at (800) 800-9800, option 2†.

If you buy a second contract, and she is on it, she can make a combined reservation, but you technically could not, at least not by calling MS. You could only make one on the contract with both names. Otherwise, it would be a split stay. Clear as mud?

It does not matter if you go resale or direct. The only difference is where you can use the points.

so.. if I buy a separate contract, and have her name on it, she would have access to all the points, (hers and mine), but I could only call to book my points, am I reading right? That doesn't really seem like a bad thing..

@yedliW One of you could actually donate the points into the other's account.

Is the donating thing a permanent thing, or is it a 1x thing? Along those lines, before I buy a 2nd contract, could we rent points from someone else, and have them donate them to us so we could combine them for a stay?

I think you can share points as often as need be. As far as renting, I usually have them pay me and I make the reservation for them. But I understand that you don't want split stays.

Correct.

Renting is completely different. In that case, the original owner still controls the reservation, and you would not be able to combine them into one stay with your points. It would be a split stay. You don't donate points to another owner, you do an official transfer to another owner, and you can only do that once a year.

You can do the transfer of points from one contract to another only once per year, whether you transfer between 2 of yours, or transfer to someone else's account. It is a one time good deal for each time that you do it, not a permanent transfer. And that owner can not transfer to anyone else during that year, and neither can you. It is once and only once no matter the direction in a given year.
