New Carousel handles?

I just happened to notice while going through our recent trip photos that there appears to be new grab handles on the carousel. Did some of the horses always have these and I just missed it or is this new?

I guess it isn't that big of a deal but still struck me as rather odd.

EDIT: I probably should have mentioned that these photos were taken about a year apart.

We also ride the Carousel many times during our trips with our little girl, and it wasn't something that I had noticed when we were there last week. I just checked our pictures from our last couple of trips dating back to last December, and all of those horses had the extra handle. She's only 2, so I can't speak for anything before that. Those were my thrill ride days and a lot has changed in our Disney trips since then!

I do like the idea of the handles as it seems to give them a little bit better balance given the wider grip.
