Need to Reschedule and Have Some Questions?!?

so unfortunately, we have to postpone our trip for this coming May! We are now rescheduling for November. i know that time of year they have free dining available. i double checked the "blackout dates" to make sure we would be okay with the switch and be in during those free dining dates. I need to call disney to change my vacation dates, but had a few questions first before i did this.

i currently have the dining plan chosen for my stay in May. I am able to apply the free dining discount once it becomes available right?

We are staying at Pop Century for our stay. When applying the free dining discount there, do you have to upgrade to a preferred room? i only ask because last year when we went with the free dining plan, we stayed at All Star Movies and we had to upgrade to a preferred room in order to get the discount. i also upgraded to the regular dining plan and paid the difference. does this same policy apply to Pop with the room, or should i upgrade to a mod resort? i guess it all depends on how much money it is in the end.

I am able to switch resorts if i need to right?

i put down my deposit already, but thats it? does my deposit still apply if i make changes to resorts and such?

this is the first time i have ever had to change a vacation at disney around like this so any help would be much appreciated!

They only allow so many rooms for free dining per resort. So if the number of regular rooms allowed to be on free dining are taken you might have to upgrade. For example, we've gotten free dining the last 3 years, stayed at All-Star Movies and had to upgrade to a preferred room, stayed at POR and had to upgrade to a garden view, and last year got to stay in a regular room.

Yeah I don't think it's a specific "policy", just that the cheaper room categories with the discount either weren't made available, or fill up quicker.

Discounts like the Free Dining promo are used by Disney to fill empty rooms.

When the decision-makers at Disney are looking at putting out discounts, if a particular room category (or even an entire resort) has enough rooms already booked at that point, they simply won't offer those room categories/resorts for the discounts. Or as others said, they might make fewer "slots" available for some room categories than others.

If you're flexible in what resort you stay at and what room category you get, then you should be fine if Free Dining comes out.

Yes you can add the discount later. Yes you can switch resorts without it affecting your deposit.
Lately, the QS plan has been offered during free-dining if you stay at a Value resort, and the regular DDP has been offered for mods. Upgrading to a preferred room at a Value will generally not get you the regular DDP. You would have to pay the difference between the QS and regular DDP to get that. However, it is worth pricing the cost of a mod at that point. On our last trip, it cost only $27 more to stay at a mod with free regular DDP vs. upgrading to the regular DDP at Pop Century. No brainer - we switched to the mod.
