Need some Old Key West Advice

Our online registration begins this Sat. for OKW and after reading various posts we have narrowed it down to where we would like to stay. We aren't DVC members and from what I can gather you can't specify where you would like to stay like bldg. 42. How do you go about getting the room that you'd like? Can you call or just keep your fingers crossed and hope you get what you want? We've only used online registration once before at FW and didn't come close to where we wanted to be. (yet it turned out just fine) I'd appreciate any tricks of the trade.

You will want to call and add any room requests or special needs to your reservation. If you make any changes between when you call and arrive make sure that the requests follow the change.

Requests need to be general in nature. (eg Ground level, close to bus stop, near elevator, etc) If you get too specific such as requesting a particular room number, it will be much harder for them to honor it and they also will not know why you wanted said room. You might want room 2402 because of its view, but they might think you want it because it is next to the stairs.

Thanks so much for the advice. How far in advance can you call in special request...do you call OKW directly? And is it possible to ask for a building..not a specific room? I would like a fairway view but not a bldg near the main road. Thanks again.

You can make the requests as soon as you make the reservation. If you are renting points from someone, have them make the requests when they make the reservation.

Requesting a certain building is fine, you just need to confirm that your room type actually exists in the building you are requesting.

Sadly, I am not as familiar with OKW as I am with the other resorts so I will be less than useless in that area and I do not know of a fan site for OKW that has a break down of the building floor plans. Hopefully someone here with more knowledge will eventually chime in and be able to give you a "yea or nay" on your building number and room type.

If you Google "OKW building configuration", someone on another board has created a list of what buildings have what types of rooms (and their location in the building).

It is very unlikely that you would get a specific building request, but you never know. Much easier would be to request a specific section, such as Turtle Pond (where bldg. 42 is located) or Millers Road. We have stayed in a few different locations, and found that Peninsular Road section was best for us (even though it is on a main road). Short walk to the bus stop (first one for the resort to the parks), and a short walk to the main buildings. While the Hospitality House location is closer to the main buildings, it is the last stop on the way to the parks, and can be very crowded in the mornings. Good luck!

It is very unlikely that you would get a specific building request, but you never know.

We have been staying at OKW for the last 14yrs and have never had a problem requesting a building number. We usually give them a couple of options and have always got one of them. The only problem we have ever had was when requesting a certain building and a room location at the same time. My wife was pregnant and my father in-law had foot surgery and we wanted a first floor room. We got the right building but ended up on the 3rd floor.

Thank you again. I was able to finally complete my online check in today and requested a room on an upper floor (doesn't matter if it's a 3rd) off of Penninsular Road. Do I still need to call beforehand and just request a certain bldg? I'd also like to be placed on the cleaning schedule as DVC members instead of daily cleaning. Should I call about that or wait upon check in? One last thing ..if I do call what number do I use?
