Disney+’s ‘Nautilus’ Rounds Off Cast; Cameras Roll In Australia
Casting is complete and filming has kicked off in Australia on Disney+’s Nautilus, the live action re-telling of Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea. Joining the previously announced Shazad Latif (The Pursuit of Love) in the lead role of Captain Nemo are Georgia Flood (Anzac Girls), who plays Humility Lucas, a privileged daughter of the British Empire who is taken hostage on board the Nautilus, and Thierry Frémont (Allied) as Gustave Benoit, a French engineer and architect of the submarine. The series, which started filming this week at Village Roadshow Studios in Queensland and is produced by Xavier Marchand’s Moonriver Studios and Anand Tucker’s Seven Stories, is one of the streamer’s most high profile to be made outside of the U.S., as it targets 60 international originals over the next two years. Other new cast members include Pacharo Mzembe, Arlo Green, Tyrone Ngatai, Ling Cooper Tang, Andrew Shaw, Ashan Kumar, Céline Menville and Kayden Price. The show has also drafted in a new Production Executive, Ian Hogan, after Julie Clark moved to ITV Studios.

I had no interest in this until I noticed Shazad Latif was the lead. And now I'm ALL IN. He's absolutely fantastic at playing tortured and obsessive (see: Star Trek: Discovery), so I'm sure he'll knock this out of the park. Or maybe back in... wouldn't it be wonderful if this kicked Nemo out of the subs at DL and returned to its far superior 20,000 Leagues roots???

As part of a cost reduction strategy at Disney, Nautilus is no longer moving forward at Disney+.

Deadline also reports Disney+ is working with the production team to find a new home for Nautilus, with meetings and screenings underway.

Between this and the Spiderwick thing, how many produced or developing series is Disney cutting?

I have a bad feeling about that Ron Moore SEA thing

As far as cutting things in development, just 2, AFAIK.

For titles that were already complete and on D+/Hulu, a few dozen.

Some D+ series were not renewed, but, that happens regularly to TV series.

Yeah, Nautilus could have been part of SEA. This one is surprising because it was commissioned by Disney and the IP has a history with Disney.

Looking to unload Spiderwick makes sense as cost cutting since it's from another studio, and so Disney would be on the hook for both IP licensing and residuals.

What’s worrisome about this is that it looks like principal filming completed early this year. So, a huge chunk of the production is done. I can’t even imagine how those that worked so hard on this feel. Put aside the artistic achievement stuff getting mothballed, I have to figure a lot of them were relying on residuals and such going forward. What an unfortunate situation for all involved.

Nemo and S.E.A. would have an antithetical as he was against colonialism, imperialism, and British nationalism.

Well, if filming was completed, why can't they just keep that footage on hand for the future? If all they had to do was post-production, then why not just say it is delayed and then, when things get "better", get back to post at a later date?

A clear distinction between this and what David Zaslav has done. Disney did not take any tax write-offs, and hinted that a lot of this axed material would emerge somewhere else in some form, especially on FAST services. WBD's slash and burn used write-offs to legally prevent material from ever airing in any form ever (or ever again).

So no, Iger is not "Zaslav lite."

Doesn't mean I like the idea of what is happening, of course.

They have product "in the can" so to speak that they can market and sell to other streamers.

Puzzling as the strike means there'll be delays in the content people actually watch. Surely some new shows could help keep people subscribed?

We'll get a clearer idea if someone does or doesn't pick it up and if we get to see it. Maybe it's awesome and so the decision was just financial. Maybe it's terrible. It'd be funny if it was ultra-woke and political. Just off the rails. Where Disney just went, "nope, not any more."
