I was watching national treasure directors commentary and they said the film sequence in the catticombs (sp) was filmed on Universal's backlot. That really supprised me. Anyone know anything about that?

Well, Desperate Housewives a show made by a disney owned company and aired on a Disney owned network is filmed at the universal backlot.

Most film studios use each other's soundstages and backlots.

Universal Studios Hollywood has the largest backlot

Paramount has the most soundstages

Sony had the largest postproduction

Disney has the only remaining working studio ranch

In today's film market it's better to rent from another studio then build your own.

What is a 'studio ranch'?
Single story house with a bed in the living room.

Sorry, I am never one to pass on a bad punch line.

Anyway, a studio ranch is an outdoor set constructed to resemble an old west frontier town. The front of the buildings are not facades, but are complete structures, allowing the buildings to also be used for filming interior shoots for "realism" (on a limited basis).

Interestingly (as it is a ride at Universal) a scene from Back to the Future was also filmed on the ranch when Michael J. Fox crashes the Delorean into the barn.
