Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films have begun developing National Treasure 2, says The Hollywood Reporter.

The studio has hired Gregory Poirier to write the movie, which will be directed by returning helmer Jon Turteltaub. Details of the story are being kept under wraps.

The first film, starring Nicolas Cage, Sean Bean, Diane Kruger, Justin Bartha and Jon Voight, earned $347.5 million worldwide. It is unclear whether any of the cast will return for the sequel.

Poirier wrote Disney's Swiss Family Robinson, which attracted Jonathan Mostow to sign on as director.

Hmm...nothing on Imdb.com about this, and they usually have the sequels for he next 5 years up and going.
I'm going to stick and say this is just a rumour, as I don't understand how they could put a continuation to something like this. they found the treasure, what next, they find more clues? Doesn't sound plausible.

Well, it could be another treasure. Maybe it could be, "International Treasure" or something.

What are you trying to say the US only has one national treasure? :)

Also, if it was just announced that they would definitely be going ahead with it, then imdb wouldn't necessarily have anything on it. Especially if the estimated release date hasn't been given yet.

On the DVD there's an alternate ending, and I thought it said that they didn't use that ending because it would look like they were trying to set it up for a sequal, which they said they didn't want to do...

It's Disney though, so I guess how could we expect them not to make a sequal? ;)

If we're to go by the alternate ending, there's going to be something on the back of the Constitution.
