MyMagic+ Trip Report - 2/28/2014

We just returned from our trip today. We used our MagicBands for the room entry, park entry, and FP+. We disabled the "swipe to pay" as we had cash to cover expenses (cash works best for budgets). I put together a pre-trip report on setting FP+ up about a month prior. It was very easy to set up and move the ride times around. However, I wasn't keen on committing to a particular park on certain days and times.

On a side note, Disney's Guest Services are filled with helpful people. I was booked at Port Orleans and saw that Wilderness Lodge had just steeply discounted rooms for this week. Though I was within 48 hours of my trip, they still booked me there and moved everything (including my FP+ reservations and Magical Express) to the new booking. This truly helped us have a magical trip as it is so nice to stay at the WL.

We arrived at MCO and could have made life easier by having the bands on before we left the plane. Note to others: Using Disney's Magical Express is a trifle quicker, check-in wise, if you have your bands on as they have readers at the line. Not to worry as they still can check us in manually.

Arrived at Wilderness Lodge, checked in, and went to the room. Using the band is kind of awkward as you have to twist your wrist around to line up the reader on the door and your band's "happy point". Aside from that, it worked great all week (except when carrying two drink mugs filled with soda).

Went to MK and our bands worked perfectly to get into the park. Still, no real improvement over the "Key to the World" but I guess that the band is handier to have ready. We went in and walked up to the FP+ reader for our first ride. I was curious about how well it would work. Surprisingly, no issues. Put the band to the scanner for about 5 seconds, the scanner turns green, and off we go. It was nice not to have to sift through the detritus in my pocket to find my paper Fastpass.

The lines to FP+ weren't long at all except if you went right when your window opened. Even then, it was a very quick moving line. I didn't have any issues that others had mentioned. Also, I did mine old school as I didn't have a smart phone to use the app's with. I printed out my itinerary and pretty much memorized my schedule. Also, the ride lines did not seem to suffer any real impact but it was also not a busy week.

One day, we didn't use our FP+ times as the weather was a little sketchy. I went later in the day and was able to rebook two completely different rides with the FP+ Kiosk. Again, no line and it was somewhat easy. It took me some time figuring out how to do it but thankfully a Cast Member was onsite to help.

I did see a large number of people using the "swipe to pay" and there were no issues there either. It does probably make it a little easier. I just wanted to use cash as that really helps me keep in line with the budget.

Overall, it worked fine. I didn't feel that it made my visit any better except that I knew when I was riding three rides.

Glad to hear things worked out for you.

As a side note, you can set up a room charge account using cash and then use your Band/card like a debit card from that balance. It has to be done in-person at the front desk, and the CM may have to look up the procedure in the manual or call a manager, but it can be done.

A quick question. Under the old fast pass system once you used your fast pass you could go and get another fastpass and once used another and so on. In the run of a day I might use fast passes for the same ride more than once and a few on others. If I was in the park long enough I might use fastpass somewhere around 5 times etc. Under this new system it appears that once I have my 3 fast passes, that is it and for the rest of the day you just have to wait in line. In other words those three are all you get. Is such the case?

Yes. Only 3 per day, all in the same park. And for 3 different attractions, no repeats.

Well while I will be guaranteed certain rides I don't see this new way of doing things as an improvement, further, it makes me decide which of my favs I get a pass for as in most cases I don't get to pick both, TT and soarin. Fast pass + is already getting a thumbs down from me and I have not even arrived yet. I would be able to ride more and faster with the old fastpass system.

For me, I just didn't get that it added anything to the experience. I was never a big user of FP prior to this aside from trying for some of the rides with longer lines. I expect queuing at an amusement park. I am still not a fan of having assigned times prior to going as our plans are very fluid. I think that the biggest push with MyMagic is trying to make it easier for those who don't go often and also to make it easier to spend more money. That's why, when you're on a budget, it doesn't provide the impact that Disney was looking for.

It also gives Disney datamining abilities that they may not have had before. I see a time coming when you scan your band prior to riding any ride (FP+ or not) so that Disney can learn your favorite rides and then provide an itinerary that reflects your choices.

However, I really just wanted to put a report out there to show that it worked fairly seamlessly for us. We could make our reservations prior, we could change the FP+ at the park fairly easily (once we figured out how), and everything was sync'd up. If we had used the MagicBands to pay, we wouldn't have needed to carry anything on us except the Band as it would be our room key, FP tool, and payment device all in one. Also, we were able to do it without using a smartphone or data plan.

This would have been good to know. I like the thought of not having to dig cash out or find the coins that have nestled at the very bottom of my pocket while people wait in line behind me.

Yes. The new system stinks for that reason only!

I was there last week too and found the MBs worked great for everything. We did use them for room charges and it all worked well. We too made some FP+ changes based on the weather and were able to secure great times for rides both times we did this.
