The family and I are going to Universal in May for the first time after threatening for many years. I am a WDW devotee and the thought of a trip to Orlando without going to WDW still makes me shutter. I'll be traveling with 3 kids aged 13, 7, and 3. At various places that I've been to, there are differing ways of dealing with families with young children. How does Universal deal with families with children that cannot ride a lot of the rides? Before fast pass, WDW used to allow the family to wait in line then they took 1 parent with the children to the exit to await the return of the rest of the party, then the person that waited could then board. Is Universal doing something like that?

This process is often called a "Child Swap", and yes, Universal Orlando offers a very similar program in both of its parks. Additionally, they provide comfortable, separate rooms for the waiting parent and child, often with some sort of entertainment (toys, related TV show, etc.). In fact, these rooms are offered in almost every major ride (they even have a separate room for Cat in the Hat!)

Have a great trip, I'm sure you'll have an amazing time... Universal Orlando really is a great place, even with young children!
