PLEASE NOTE: This is a fictitious version that relies’s heavily on what currently exists in the 2007 version of Spaceship Earth. Various elements of the current version have been altered in this work of fiction. This version is meant to use a new script for the current version, while providing some altercations to current show scenes.
As we head toward Spaceship Earth (SSE), we notice that there is not a large crowd in the queue. We see the wait time sign…5 minutes. The sign is black and white with blue and silver metallic paint. The sign has the new SSE logo on it. Next to this sign is a warning sign, it reads, “Warning: Spaceship Earth is a slow moving attraction that takes guests on a time machine themed journey that shows how advancements in human communications have allowed us to invent, create, and shape the future one step at a time. Because the attraction involves periods of dark and enclosed spaces, guests that may become uncomfortable due to the nature of the attraction should not ride. A Cast Member is present to accommodate guests who require assistance in entering and exiting the attraction.
We walk up the ramp, past rows and rows of sculpted and maintained plants and flowers. We see the SSE blue color scheme walls as well as the black and white signs with the SSE logo. We approach the giant mural that sits next to the entrance area. At this point we hear a voice overhead (can be a man or woman)
“Please step carefully onto the moving platform. The platform and your time machine vehicle are traveling at the same rate of speed. If you or a member of your party requires assistance in entering and exiting your time machine vehicle, a Cast Member is present to accommodate you or a member of your party. Thank You.”
We are just about to enter the load room. The same voice we heard next to the entrance mural can be heard next to the entrance door: “The sliding doors on your time machine vehicle will close automatically. Please remain seated, keeping your hands, arms, feet, and legs inside your time machine vehicle at all times. Thank You”
We enter the load room. A room of blues, greens, grays, and whites. The wall paneling has lights dashing across it. A Cast Member leads us to our vehicle. We enter our vehicle. Two seats in the front, two seats in the back. TWO touch screens per row. There is one screen for everyone. The screen is on. In the background is a twinkling field of stars and galaxies. In the foreground reads “Please Select a Language”. We do so. The text disappears and the graphic image remains. The text then reads “Your time machine vehicle’s touch screen is capable of allowing you to invent, create, and shape the future in a world of tomorrow that is custom made just for you. Would you be interested in using your time machine vehicle’s touch screen toward the end of your journey for this experience?” Each person in the vehicle either selects “Yes” or “No”
Our vehicles continue to curve along the load track. The doors to our vehicles close. New text appears on the same graphic background. It is a map of the world. The text above the map reads: “Touch where you live.” We then zoom into the map and touch where we live to the nearest major town or city. The map disappears and the text changes, it reads “We are about to take your picture, please look ahead, smile, and wait for the flash.” We enter a small and dark alcove. Above us is a field of stars twinkling in the see-through ceiling. Right before we enter the ascent tunnel is a smaller screen in the center of the ceiling. We see ourselves, smile, the frame flashes, and we enter the ascent tunnel.
We head up into the ascent tunnel past sparkling and sleek metallic paneling of the same color scheme was saw in the load room. Our touch screen changes to show various graphic visuals in correspondence to the audio we are about to hear from our vehicle speakers:
The voice we hear is the same voice we have heard so far. It says “On behalf of the Walt Disney Company and Siemens, welcome aboard Spaceship Earth…Spaceship Earth is a slow moving attraction that takes guests on a time machine themed journey that shows how advancements in human communications have invented, created, and shaped the future one step at a time.
During your journey, your time machine vehicle will slowly rotate backwards and may have to make an unscheduled stop. For your safety, and the safety of those around you we ask that you please remain seated, keeping your hands, arms, feet and legs inside your time machine vehicle at all times. Also, please silence any electronic device that may produce noise such as a cell phone, beeper, pager, or walkie-talkie.
We also ask that you refrain from the use of eating, drinking, and smoking. Photography and Videotaping is allowed, but please refrain from the use of flash photography as well as videotaping with a bright or external light source. Thank You.”
Our screen turns off. We leave the curved paneled tunnel. We continue to ascend into the structure now in a straight path. Fields of twinkling stars surround us. They are of all different colors, shapes, and sizes.
The same voice we now heard says “We would now like to introduce you to your host during your journey, (first and last name).”
Our host: “Hello ladies and gentleman, boys and girls… welcome aboard Spaceship Earth! Since the dawn of recorded history, we have sought answers to the following questions: Who are we? What is our purpose? Where did we come from? When will we find out? How did we get here? and Why are we here? Who, What, Where, When, How, and Why…these are the questions that have challenged us every step we take.
However, the answers to these questions lie in our past…
*The field of stars become less and less…we feel a breeze…fog envelopes us…it becomes very dark and we can here a quiet sound of dialogue and recordings in the background…famous words and sentences and even some everyday dialogue can be heard*
Let the suns reverse! Let the moons re-phase as we journey back, over 40,000 years to the dawn of recorded time to seek those answers in the hope that we can better understand ourselves and each other on spaceship earth!
*We approach clouds and nebulas. Thunder can be heard. Flashes of lightning can be seen all around us* We approach a swarm of sounds of man and animal. Mammoths and man can be seen swirling around us.*
Here is where our journey begins…the dawn of recorded time! Spaceship Earth is a hostile and lonely planet. Man struggles to survive…but through the blessing of the human mind and body our early ancestors learned to communicate with one another… now man can hunt and gather as a team...and survive...together!
*We then encounter a large graphic visual of man fighting a mammoth. The narration is silent, and we are able to hear the struggle and see the fight between man and beast.*
*We approach a cave where a shaman describes cave paintings to his tribe*
No longer isolated and no longer alone, we establish small tribes and record our knowledge on cave walls.
*We now approach the Egyptian scene*
The Egyptians invent the first written communication - a complex language of hieroglyphic pictures and symbols. With the creation of papyrus scrolls, came the world's first piece of paper. Now, without ever leaving their palaces, pharaohs could deliver proclamations and decrees to subjects across the land.
*We now enter the Phoenician scene*
It was at this point that each civilization had created its own unique form of written communication, which none of the others could understand. Fortunately, the Phoenician’s, who traded with many of them, created a simple common alphabet easy enough to understand.
*We now enter the Greek School scene*
The Ancient Greeks benefited gratefully from the Phoenicians. The Greeks were not only able to create a long-lasting civilization, but established the theatre, public schools, and mathematics.
*We now enter the Roman scene*
With lessons learned from the Greeks, the Romans successfully built a mighty network of roads that traveled across their vast empire. North, south, east, and west…all roads lead to and from Rome.
*we enter the burning Rome scene*
It would be these same roads that would ultimately turn against Rome. The great libraries of Alexandria and Egypt are destroyed. Some of humanities greatest achievements are lost in the ashes...
*we enter the scholar scene*
Copies of some of the books once thought lost are secured by various Arab and Jewish scholars. They debated new ideas and shared wisdom to all across the eastern and western world.
*we enter the Monk scene*
In the shadows of the Dark Age, Monks toil endlessly transcribing ancient writings into hand-penned books of revelation.
*we enter the printing press scene*
In 1450, Guttenberg invents the moveable type printing press. Increased production and availability of books allow stories, thoughts, and ideas to spread across the world faster than ever before.
*we enter the Renaissance scene*
Books fuel the explosion of science and art that is… the Renaissance! Behold the majesty of the Sistine Ceiling!
*we enter the age of innovation*
From this wave of inspiration we sail into a bold new era. The age of innovation. An age of astounding inventions and ever increasing progress. For the first time ever, the world as we knew it began to shrink.
We could send messages instantly over long distances. Signals and voices criss-cross the nation. Radio and movies inform and entertain millions. Television enters our home and changes the way we look at the world around us.
By the middle of the 20th century we could communicate from anywhere on the planet, and in 1969…from somewhere else.
*We enter the computer room*
To send a man to the moon, we needed to speak a new language, one spoken not by man, but by computer. A complex system of zeros and ones, computer technology stores, sifts, counts, and helps us chart numerous facts and figures.
While the first computers were very large and expensive, the potential in them allowed us to wonder if it would be possible for anyone to obtain such a machine.
*we now approach the garage scene*
In 1977, a young man working in a garage in California successfully created the first Personal Computer. Small enough to be in one’s office or home, the Personal Computer and the technology that accompanied it led us into the age of information.
*we now enter the matrix tunnel*
The voice we heard at the beginning of the attraction is heard in our vehicle “Your time machine vehicle will soon be slowly rotating backwards for your return to Earth and the present day, please remain seated keeping your hands, arms, feet, and legs, inside your time machine vehicle at all times. Thank you.
Our host then comes back across our speakers
The remainder of the 20th century was an era in which we finally had the ability to connect with one another in a mere instant. Now that we’ve reached the 21st century we must be careful in how we use new and improving capabilities.
*we enter the planetarium*
In the great frontier of outer space we see our planet as it truly is…small…fragile…alive! It is our home…our Spaceship Earth!
We truly are a global neighborhood.
*our vehicles turn backwards and we head into a worm tunnel of infinite stars* It is the start of our journey back to Earth and the present day.
Through the infinite cosmos of space and time we have taken a journey that has shown how over 40,000 years of advancements in human communications have allowed us to invent, create, and shape the future one step at a time.
(There are now two scenarios for the ending)
Guests who chose not to create their future will have their screen off for the rest of the ride. There will be no narration. They can view the gas clouds and lightning and storms as we break the boundaries of space and time and head further back to Earth and the present day. These guests will also see the tiles of the Spaceship Earth structure come together amongst stars and other structures that form a tile and then separate and disappear into a field of stars.
Guests who choose to have the create their future option will have their screens light up once we’ve reached the gas cloud segment.
Now…it’s your turn!
On your time machine vehicle’s touch screen, answer a few questions for us. The answers to these questions let you invent, create, and shape the future. A world of tomorrow that is custom made just for you!
*guests answer questions which have the grid of blue dots in the background of the touch screen*
*graphics of world of tomorrow being drawn on the screen*
You’re future is ready!
*guests view video*
*Screens for guests that did not take the survey remain off…and those that did take the survey do turn off after their video is done. Around guests are twinkling stars and swirling fiber optics, with a model of SSE floating in the center of the ceiling.*
While no one knows for sure what we will see or do with the answers to those age-old questions, we must use the time we live in now to continue to seek answers, ask questions, and better understand ourselves and each other so that we can become Captains of our destiny on our grand and miraculous Spaceship Earth!
*Vehicles rotate backward and a spiel for Project Tomorrow is heard on our speakers*
