I have only read The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. It was a easy and enjoyable book (only took me this weekend) 175 pages. Nothing on the grand scale of LoTR (which is almost too detailed at times).
I think that this makes it almost EASIER for the filmmaker. They do not go into too much detail about the major battles or the personalities of the kids, at least in this book. So the script writers have alot of leeway to add & flesh out and expand things for the "better". Unlike LoTR, where they had to squeeze in everything and decide what would meet the cutting room floor, I don't see that as an issue.
Also, as much as I love LoTR, you have to be in a certain mood to digest all that is happening. While Narnia is easier to get "into" & "out of". Narnia will fit in with Disney target audience and appeal to a grander scope of people than just the "Tolkien fanatics".
The only thing that scares me is that Disney seems too scared to push the envelope with ANYTHING these days and the director of Shrek 2 (I detest the Shrek movies more than Eisner does Katzenburg) is in charge.
