My Day at Universal Studios 11/1

Took my family (2 kids age 7 and 4) to Universal on Monday November 1 and thought I'd do a quick review. Got to the park at opening and did Shrek 4:D immediately. Very good show. Seems very long in comparison to other 3-D shows. Entertaining.

Then crossed the street and did Jimmy Neutron. I really enjoy this one and my son just got to 40" so he could ride the moving seats which was nice. This is a very witty presentation and an enjoyable ride. I find it to be significantly superior to Star Tours.

After that we headed back to E.T. and walked right on the ride. This is a great dark ride. (It may be the last greatslow-moving dark ride built in Orlando - its better than anything Disney has built since 1989 IMO). We did a quick walk-on ride on the Woody Woodpecker coaster to appease the kids and then headed to Men In Black. My son was not eligible to ride this because of the 44" minimum (I have to admit that the 44 inch minimum was a bit of a headshaker considering that 70 MPH Test Track has a 40 inch minimum and all you do on MIB is spin a little). Wife hated the spinning aspect but I thought this was a very good ride that was themed tremendously. Next we did Back to the Future which isn't that entertaining to me anymore. The good thing about this ride from Universal's perspective I guess is that it doesn't take up much space. Had lunch and caught the Animal Planet show which was nice.

Then went and did Jaws, which was still only a 10-15 minute wait. Scared the beejeepers out of the kids plus our butts all got wet. Skipped Earthquake because it was a 35 minute wait (longest wait time we saw in the whole park which was very curious to me). After winning some stuffed animals for the kids, some of the adults did the The Mummy Coaster (only a 15 minutes wait around 2PM. I thought it was a bit short but alot of fun and a tremendous upgrade over Kongfrontation. Did not do Twister, T2 or Earthquake. Went to the Fievel's playground and let the kids run around a bit. Did E.T. one more time and left the park after brief shopping at 3:45 PM or so.

All in all a very, very good day. I have not been to IOA because my kids can't do much there with the height requirements. However, I am generally a Disney guy but USF is far, far superior to Disney Studios at this point, IMO.

Nice report - but must disagree with the quote - MGM isn't the most exciting park in Orlando but it is far superior to USF

I would have to say its true that Universal studios is better than MGM studios because of its overall amount of attractions for the kids and adults. But MGM has better staff and shows compared to Universal. Don't get me wrong, my favorite ride is in that park and I would like to see more in MGM to keep me in the park longer than a couple hours.

Glad to see that you had a good time Snapper :)

I also agree. USF has more attractions and better theming, IMO.

Thanks for sharing your trip report with us. Glad to hear you had a good time. :)

Everybody here knows how much more I care for Universal than Disney, especially now. The best thing Disney has going for it are the fireworks at the end of the day.

I wouldn't go as far as saying far, far superior, but overall I do think that USF is better. But only because MGM doesn't have that much to do compared to USF. Especially for a non coaster person.

Theming??

Universal??

Where!

Duelling Dragons? Only ouside theming

The Hulk? small theming

The only good theming is at Spiderman and Jurassic Park...

But don't think I don't like USF... I like it very much...

I used to go there a lot...

But not for the theming... :) LOL :)

I had been talking about the theming at Universal Studios Florida, which IMO is far superior to the theming at the Disney MGM Studios.

And I do believe that Islands of Adventure is one of THE best themed parks in the world....just because you can't theme a coaster doesn't mean the rest of the park and its attractions aren't well themed.

not a big fan of USF (mainly the disrespect towards Ghostbusters). good thing you didn't do Twister. thatw as one of the lamest things i've ever seen.

anyone else notice the amount of fire USF uses though? Twister, Jaws, EarthQuake, Mummy, Kong had it, that waterworld thing, spider-man...

Islands of Adventure has some of the most amazing themeing anywhere IMO. Everything from the trash cans to the ground you walk on it themed in most places! And Dueling Dragon doesn't only have outside theming. Have you been inside the castle? That's one of the best lines ever. And the coaster cars are themed as dragons.

I also think that Universal Studios is themed a lot better than MGM. The only well themed part of MGM is Tower of Terror and it even it looks out of place. Compare New York at US to the New York section of MGM...I believe that US is far superior!
