Hey guys, I'm incredibly excited about my first upcoming trip to Disneyland this summer! My father and I are taking a 10 day trip that will have us there during the Fourth of July holiday. I was aiming to book this trip in hopes of Carsland's opening and luckily its paid off. After visiting WDW a ton of times over the years, I've been dying to see Disneyland for so long. As a Disneyland first timer, what would you guys recommend as being "must do's"? As you can imagine being there for 10 days I intend on doing literally everything possible, I'm really looking forward to Indiana Jones Adventure, Mickey's Toontown (especially Roger Rabbit's Car Toon Spin, my Dad and I are gigantic fans of the film), and of course the opening of Carsland! Glad to share my excitement for the trip with so many passionate Disney fans here. Thanks in advance for any input.

Wow - 10 days! That's a lot for Disneyland! (nothing wrong with it...just sayin'!)

You will definitely be able to do it all with 10 days, so there aren't really any must-do's that I would specifically point out (well, except for World of Color, but that's a no brainer!)

Use that time to take notice of all of the little details. Disneyland is certainly smaller than WDW, but it's no less detailed. If anything, I'd say that Disneyland probably has better details in many ways because of the fact that they put so much in such a small space.

Anyhow, enjoy!!!

Thanks very much for responding. I really look forward to seeing World of Color, we wanted to take a 10 day trip since we're coming all the way from the east coast so we wanted to enjoy every minute of it.

You will love it. I went to WDW over 20 times before finally going to DLP last year and it was fantastic, even without the new stuff that's coming. It is a lot smaller and the food isn't as good, but the rides, man oh man, are fantastic. You will notice a higher quality in the rides versus what you see at WDW. Fantasyland was my favorite part of the trip, as it is so awesome at DLP. You will also enjoy the DLP version of Pirates and Big Thunder Mountain. Space Mountain is awesome there too. The only thing I really missed there was the lack of Carousel of Progress and the Epcot Future World rides but with Carsland, you will at least get some kind of Test Track ride there. Enjoy!

I really can't wait for this trip! I'll be spending a week in WDW in August so it's going to be a Disney-filled summer, that's for sure. I'm equally as excited to check-in to the Grand California Resort, everything I've read about and photos I've seen all look gorgeous. Random question, but does anyone know if Disneyland is still selling a particular hat. It's a red snapback/trucker hat with a vintage Disneyland logo on the front. I bought a blue WDW snapback last October so I'm dying to get my hands on the Disneyland one. Thanks in advance if anyone knows.

i seen the disneyland snapback with the retro disneyland logo, but i dont remember if its red. if it wasnt, then i'm sure they have multiple colors. i think POTC is a must considering its nearly twice as long as the MK version. space mountain for its side by side seating and on ride audio and different inside queue. matterhorn (it'll be back up from its refurb). mr toad's wild ride if you never got to ride it in MK...

on another note, roger rabbit's toon spin was somewhat disappointing because i'm such a big fan of the film. it could have been so much more, but the queue is pretty awesome to take in. while i did all that i did in one day... i say just admire EVERYTHING. you surely have to time to do so. hope you have fun

Thanks so much for responding to the thread. I'm really happy to know that the Disneyland hat that I described is still being sold, I really want to pick one up. I can't wait to check out all the attractions you listed, the Matterhorn is going to be a real treat for me. I'm so happy that the refurbishment is going to be complete by the time I get there.

I just saw that exact red trucker hat for sale last night at the Star Trader shop in Tomorrowland.

10 days at Disneyland? :lookaroun

That's a very, very long time to stay at Disneyland. I hope you guys are going to have a rental car and are making plans to get away on some of those days to see the sights and wonders of Southern California; the beaches, mountains, deserts, San Diego Zoo, San Diego Safari, Sea World, Knott's Berry Farm, Universal Studios Hollywood, the Warner Brothers Studio Tour, Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, Legoland, Reagan or Nixon Presidential Libraries, Griffith Observatory, The Getty, etc., etc., etc.

I just went to my "1st Disneyland trip" for 3-nights/4-days and did almost everything I could (although another night would have allowed me to see a couple more shows) so 10 days will be plenty of time to see everything and more as TP2000 suggests. Since you have the time try some of the sit down restaurants too like Blue Bayou and Ariel's as they were very nice, but make sure to get a reservation for BB at least a day before as they can end up being booked the entire day.

That's great to hear about the hat! I can't wait to get it now. Trust me, we knew 10 days seemed like a lot but we wanted to really unwind and go for as long as we possibly could. We definitely have plans of seeing Universal Studios and dining at plenty of the restaurants Disney has to offer. Thanks again for the heads up on that hat, I really appreciate it.

To the Disneyland vets, I have to ask you, does it matter if I go in late August or should I wait until September? The weather will be similar and that's the point because I wanted to swim in the beaches, but my main concern is with the crowds at Disneyland and then Universal. Weekends are weekends regardless, its GOING TO be busy. But during August when the kids are still out of school would a Monday, or Tuesday or any other day of the week be really busy just because its summer? Or does it not matter even when the kids are back in school in September? Is it all the same?

Speaking based on personal experience, August is the time families want to get in their last bits of vacation in before school, aka go to Disneyland, Six Flags, Universal Studios, etc. To be safe, I would go during September. There is the occasional family that yanks their kids out of school to go to Disneyland, but that shouldn't be too much of a problem, since September is the first month of school.:)

We went to DLR for our first time last summer (been to WDW 24 times over the last 14 years). We LOVED it. It's just an amazing place. I was shocked at how different DL is from MK. Not only is it tiny (and I mean tiny), but even the attractions that are the same (PotC, HM, Splash and Space Mtn, etc) are actually really different.

We were there from the 8 to the 14 last year, and the crowds actually weren't that bad.
At DL, from about 9:00-11:00, there were no more than 20 min waits. Then from like, 11:30ish-4:00ish it was pretty much what you'd expect with crowds, the big rides were like, an 1hr-1hr1/2 wait, the small ones were around 30 mins. After 5:00 though crowds were wonderful. One thing that was interesting, FL attractions don't have fast pass. This actually works well, as I don't think the FL wait times were ever more than 30-45 mins, much better than the 60+min waits at WDW.
Fantasmic was a major pain in the butt. They cram you in the viewing area like sardines, and people camp out to watch the show starting at like, 2:00pm. My brother could not see at all. It was really sad actually lol. We were very dissapointed because with the crowds, it was really hard to enjoy, and people are constantly trying to shove in front of you and it's just a giant mess. I know everyone seems to like the fact that Fantasmic at DL isn't in a stadium, but honestly, I think the stadium makes the show a lot easier to enjoy...maybe it's not so bad in the fall, idk.
The best part about DL? The fireworks show, Magical. Just like the name says, it's probably the most magical show I've ever seen. I LOVED it. It really is Disney magic in its purest form...

From what I remember, at DCA there weren't very many waits at all. I think we may have waited like, 20 mins for Soarin' (and that was at like, noon. It was sooo wonderful compared to the Epcot wait!) and maybe about the same at California Screamin'. Little Mermaid is always walk on, which was cool. Grizzly River Rapids was like, an hour wait from like, noon-5:00, but all other times the attraction was pretty much walk on. I'm not sure how things will change given the fact that BVST and Carsland are opening...I would imagine crowds will be hoppin' this year...
World of Color was AMAZING. One of the coolest shows I've ever seen. The only thing is, you need a ticket in order to get in the viewing area. Normally, that wouldn't be too big of a deal, except that the ticket looks an awful lot like a FP, and you receive one the same way you receive a FP, and so, my family thought they were Fast Passes...they aren't. We thought we would be allowed access for the viewing area before other guests, assuming our ticket was a FP, and it's not. Get your ticket first thing you do when you walk into DCA (it's located near GRR). About an hr before the show starts, a line forms outside the viewing area. I would recommend getting in line for WoC at least 30 mins before the show starts...at least. The viewing area is a lot nicer than Fantasmic's, and my guess is you can enjoy the show no matter where you are, it's just gonna be a lot more enjoyable to be in front of the crowd rather than behind it.

Overall, we had a wonderful trip. It's awesome staying so close to the parks that you just walk them, and you're staying litterally right next to the parks, so that'll be really cool. Having the parks right across from each other is a plus too, because when you finish with DCA, you just walk right over to DL. And Downtown Disney has some really tasty restaurants (The Jazz Kitchen has amazing beignets, perfect for breakfast before heading into the parks), so that's fun too. Have fun!

Edit: I just saw you said you were going to Uni too! I don't know if you guys are early morning people or not, but if you get to the park as soon as it opens, you'll have probably about a 3 hr period where all rides are walk on, at least we did (I'm assuming crowds will be about the same lol). The Tram Tour is incredible. We did a survey at the front of the park, and they gave us a pass to skip the Tram Tour line, so that was really awesome lol (stop for surveys if you're asked to!) All of the other attractions are pretty well the same as what's found in USF. But yeah, basically we got everything done by Noon, got in line for the tram tour, finished that up and were out of the park by like, 3:00. With 10 days, I suppose you guys may want to spend a little more time there maybe, but I don't think 10 days is going to feel that long at all honestly...idk.

One other point, if you tour Hollywood, don't be dissapointed by the fact that it's no where near as pretty as DHS . My expectations were just a tad too high I'm afraid lol.

I strongly suggest you go to Knotts Berry Farm during your visit.

Its only 10 mins away from Disney, and the park has a lot of connections to Disneyland.

Log Ride, inspired Splash Mountain

Mine Ride, inspired Big Thunder Mountain

Mystery Lodge, Special effects show designed by a former Imagineer.

Also, Ghost Town far surpasses Frontier-Land at both WDW and DL, and that section of the park has sooo much history and charm.

And its a great place to go ride some big roller coasters. Xcelerator is an awesome launch coaster that makes Rockin Roller Coaster and California Screamin seem like kiddie coasters.

And if you want to try great food, Knotts is world famous for their fried chicken dinners and boysenberry pies.

Again, highly suggest visiting Knotts.

Hey Mike! Ten days for the Disneyland Resort is a lot! I'm not saying it's not a good idea or anything, but with ten days you can visit other landmarks too. I would suggest you and your dad visit the El Capitan Theatre on Hollywood Blvd. This theatre screens Disney movies only, and it's a gorgeous theater. It's not your typical movie theater; it's very classy. Right next door is the Disney Soda Fountain, where they sell ice cream, treats, sandwhiches, and other sorts of good food! Anyways, just a suggestion! I could go on about other places you could visit by the way!

Oh thanks for reminding me! I've idolized the El Capitan for so long. I'd love to check it out while I'm in the area. I wish I could have been there when they had the 20th Anniversary screening of "The Rocketeer", that seemed like an awesome panel of guests taking part in the Q&A. There really is an endless amount of landmarks to check out while we're there so hopefully I can make a dent in all of your suggestions. Thanks for the tips so far guys! Less than 3 months to go!
