Mulan live action film flaw

Couldn't find anything about this so I have a question about the film Mulan live action.

Throughout the film, everyone is speaking about 'saving the kingdom'. Isn't China at this moment an empire? Even Mulan herself has a quote "I know my place, and it is my duty to fight for the kingdom and protect the emperor." Which is a really strange (and false) thing to say. You can be an emperor of an empire or a king of a kingdom but not combined. This is not really relevant for the film but this looks to me like a silly mistake. Am I wrong here?

China is the Middle Kingdom. The European distinction of empire, kingdom, principality, duchy, etc. don’t really apply and historically such distinctions were considered lesser than the Son of Heaven.
