It sounds like my upcoming trip will be my last chance to get good shots of my favorite parade. I'm still new to the DSLR and manual world, so any tips on good shots? Thanks!

If you're not comfortable in full manual I'd probably shoot in shutter priority and set your ISO as high as you can with usable results. I might dial exposure compensation back a stop or two too, better to have the shot a little dark than too blurry. If you have a fast lens (2.8 or lower) it's a pretty easy parade to shoot.

Depending on the camera you may also benefit from turning the camera's flash on. No it wont likely help you because you'll be too far away, but when its on the camera will usually set the shutter speed fast enough that you wont get blurs. I remember doing it that way for the Spectral Magic one year and it worked well.

Flash is the last thing you want to use for a night parade. It illuminates the black floats and reduces the intensity of the lights.

If you have a DSLR, make sure the flash is off, set ISO as high as you can go, and set the aperture to go as wide as possible. You will need a lens capable of f2.8, which should give you a shutter speed near 1/100 sec. ALso shoot raw to reduce noise from the high ISO.

I think what thomas998 was saying was that if you're not shooting in a manual or semi-manual mode turning the flash on will make the camera use a faster shutter speed. Which is true most of the time, but still better to just skip those auto modes and do it yourself.
