Building on the $3 billion-plus Disney Princess brand, the Walt Disney Co. plans to launch a companion line in 2006 focused on fairies.

At the center of the merchandise line will be Tinker Bell, Peter Pan's pint-size pixie friend. Other fairies in the group would include a diverse lineup of Miss Bell's friends.

"It's for the little girls who have always wondered about Tinker Bell and her friends," said Mary Beech, vice president of Disney Princess and Girls Brands. Beech was in Orlando on Friday.

The Disney Princess line is a favorite among little girls ages 2 to 6, Beech said. From miniature look-alike dresses to roller skates and coloring books labeled in the Disney Princess theme, the line is one of the company's most popular and lucrative merchandise segments.

Jim Hill has some pics about the new line on his site today: http://www.jimhillmedia.com/mb/articles/showarticle.php?ID=1602

Yeah, we all know, the Mouse is out to make money and all that. But the Princesses make sense to be on a line. I mean, there are several of them and the possibilities are varied. But personally, everybody someone asks me what's my favorite Princess, I usually say Tink. I mean, I know Wendy is Peter's leading lady, but Tink was sassy! And now... Well, now it seems they're changing her personality, one that has already been toned down a lot since the original Peter Pan movie, and she's no longer unique, but one of many fairies.

But, like all the merchandise spots and the meet n' greets, it's all about what the "kids" want.

I don't think the Princess line is going anywhere, they're just adding another slot to their money machine.

And Maelstrom, I didn't mean to imply this would only be interesting to kids. I'm sure there are many adults out there who love all these Princess dolls and DVDs we can find all over the toy stores. I just meant that, to me, they're ruining all of Tink's great characteristics. Pimping her, if you will. That's a strong use of words, but I guess it applies. I mean, they say she has a temper all they want, but compare Tink's character on the original Peter Pan and on Return to Neverland. They're very different. And I think they'll be toning her down even more on her new movie, since she'll get the spotlight.

That's the buzz. Theoretically, it's ok for her to be speaking, because it'll be among fairies. So it's like it's all translated for us. But still, I don't know, it feels wrong to me.
