There is a really neat article by Bob Gurr over at Laughing Place. If you are interested in monorails, industrial design, project management, or just like insider stories from the glory days of Disney you should check it out!

Thanks for the link! :)

I saw that first photo on the front page, but I usually just go to glance at the news/rumors headlines then leave. I never looked any further.

Pardon me, Tyler, but what are the Las Vegas trains?

Thanks.
Two of the old Mark IV trains from WDW are currently in Las Vegas connecting the MGM Grand to Bally's. (That's right, there is finally a monorail to MGM! hehehe) They are being retired because a new expanded system with Bombardier MVI trains is under construction.

Not to sound like I know what I'm talking about, but I thought there were 4 trains in service out there, I could be wrong, I just thought there were. I knew there were trains running out there, I just have the number 4 in my head for some reason.

I do know about the new system. I don't understand the early retirement though, since the project isn't due for completion until (at least planned) '04 (if we're talking about the same thing).

Nope... currently only 2 Mark IV trains out there. However, there is another system... they might have 4 trains. Not really quite sure what kind of system it is, and whether or not its a real monorail.

There are 4 MkIV trains that were not destroyed right away, maybe that is what you are thinking of? In addition to the ones that went to Vegas, red and silver sat around in storage for quite a long time. Only recently has red been broken up and sold on eBay.

As for the early retirement of the current trains, the most recent news brief at monorails.org makes some sense out of it. The existing stations need to be refurbished for the new automated trains and a lot of additions need to be made to the beamway to connect it to the new system. That's a lot of work and they can't do any of it if the monorail is still running!

Great info LIME!

It's gonna be a long walk from Bally's to MGM for those who have been spoiled by the Monorail!

I have been on it many times and it's a GREAT break from the heat and the walking!

Sure will be nice when the extended version is up and running!

:)

Just a lil sidenote... "Sideshow" transferred to Kilimanjaro Safari, so we no longer have that going... lol :)
