Moderate resorts vs. WL

OK, we are booked for the WL in September, 2004. We stayed at the WL in September, 2002, and my husband (who was a Disney cynic) became a Disney fan as well. He loved the boat ride to the MK. Now, however, we need to save a little money, so I think we might change our reservation to a moderate. I've stayed at the Port Orleans, and that is great. But I'm thinking about doing the Caribbean Beach - any thoughts?

As a mult-time visitor to WDW who has stayed at WL, CBR, PO: FQ and RS, among others, I can personally state that PO:FQ is the best moderate resort on property.

In my opinion, nothing beats WL, but PO:FQ is my favorite moderate resort. The Problem with CBR is that the theming isn't as immersive and the hotel is VERY large and spread out, feeling a lot more like the value-level All Star resorts. At least to me.

WL is a Deluxe resort, but the least expesnive of the bunch. Being Deluxe you get intieir hallways and elevators. Both help in the rain or poor weather.

We have stayed at all the mods (but aren't going back any times soon after joining DVC.) CB is our least fav. It isn't bad, but we feel Dixie landings (AKA POR) is much better. Great food court, beatiful theming. POFQ is smaller and the pool is good for little kids (but not zero entry.) CS is very nice too, good pool and good kiddie play area. All mods are great for kids (and I hear All Stars are too for that mater.)

The big differnce is the walk at the mod resorts. If the weather is nice it won't bug you as much. Also if you have a stoller be sure to stay on the 1st floor or in a building with an elevator. Coming home a night with a kid asleep in the stoller and having to get them out or carry the whole stoller up the stairs is a pain. When we stayed at OKW they stairwells aren't even covered and it rained all most all the time (this was Aug 2003, so what did we expect?)

I've stayed at WL before as well as Caribbean Beach, Coronado Springs, and Port Orleans French Quarter. My thoughts are that although WL is my personal favorite resort, the Moderate Resorts are all also very nice. The only downfall of the moderates is the sizes of the resorts and the wait time for busses and the potential walks to the food court, etc.. As far as the themes go, it is a matter of individual choice, as no one resort is "nicer" than the other, just decorated a little differently. Coronado is more of a wooded area, Caribbean more tropical, and Port Orleans has more of a town feel. I'd recommend taking a look at the resort maps and requesting to stay in a specific building if any of these are serious issues. I can also help you out if you email me.
